Im tring to figure out how many holes to drill in my 220 and what size return pump to use.LFS said 4 hole and a mag drive 1800 or step up to the mag 2500. I would like to have 2 return to create a circular water movement and possible not have to use jet heads if possible? Any advise would be great... thanks
Awww the tank will be for the most part 80% fish only with 2 mushroom frags and i cant remember what the other coral is..

I would use a smaller pump for the return and if you want extra circulation, build a closed loop.

Pushing a lot of water through a sump is not needed. Especially if you want to use a refugium to grow macro algae.

if its mainly softies your keeping, i wouldnt worry about closed loop. Thats just another pump to add to the electric bill. If you need more water movement later on, getting some tunze would be a better choice. They cost more to start, but the every month electirc bill will be less. So in the longrun it would still be cheaper to use the tunze.

I would use a pair of 1.5" drains. I use an ampmaster 3600 and 2 1.5" drains can handle it. I run all the 3600GPH through the sump. I use a pair of 1" returns.

You can do better than a mag for that amount of water push. Some external pumps use less watts and probably will last longer than a mag. Check out ampmaster, sequence, quietone, etc.
