Return Pump Maintenance

Hi all,

I have a Mag9.5 (maybe Mag12) return pump that has been running pretty much nonstop for over three years. I have not done anything to it during that time. It seems to be pumping a bit slow lately. I was going to open it up and clean it a little. I was wondering if I should order a new impeller first so I can replace it while I have the thing out of the system.

Do any of you replace the impellers regularly? How long should one run uninterrupted?

Thanks,
Dave

I'd soak it in vinegar for a couple of hours and test it before taking apart.

But not any more than a few hours. I read that vinegar doen't only break down calcium deposits but can do a number on rubber gaskets aswell. It can make them brittle. Then again, this was after a week long soak. Just be careful to not overdo it.

Interestingly enough, I've also never replaced the impeller in my Mag 7, it's like 5 years old now I think. But I've replaced the impeller in my Sedra 3500 twice over 4 years...
