return pump orientation?? Little help here

I just got a pan world 1100gph return pump and I want to mount it vertically instead of horizontally to save space. Anyone know if this is ok? It also makes a heck of a lot of noise. Any thoughts?

I think you might get into some serious wearing issues. I am not 100% sure but I believe they are built to be oriented horizontal.

I have worked as an industrial electrician/machine tech for many years and have never seen it done.
I am not saying it is impossible, just not probable.
Just by the way they are engineered, it doesn't seem that it would be safe even if it worked, seeing that most all intakes are on the end-cap of the pump housing and discharge 90* off the casing. The water flow would have to enter from top if vertical and if there was a leak the motor ( being at the bottom ) is toast at the very least.
( there maybe pumps designed for it though just have not seen them)
Just my thoughts and observations from experience.
My advise... for what it's worth....Don't do it.

I checked with little giant and they said it is fine. I just got off the phone. They will give me more details later. I will check back...

Ok, I spoke with little Giant on the phone (My last pump was from them) and I don't speak chineese. They said as long as the pump has water flowing into it by gravity, it can definitely be oriented vertically, as these kind of pumps are NOT self-priming. Thanks for the help. Bye the way, man were they ever a big help on the phone. They spent about 45 min with me question after question. I felt really bad about buying a chinese pump (or whatever). I didn't even think about it. I got the pan world because they are sealed (no oiling) and the little giant was not. Now I may go back to the L.G.

Next development is in: I had a whining problem with my pan world, and it also ended up being not powerful enough to run my SCWD. So I called Dan at the critter and without even so much as a blink told me to bring the problem pump back and then when I told him about the hypo-flow situation, he really gave me the skinny on what was best for me. As it turns out the pump he reccomended was a lot cheaper in price then the one I wanted (a larger pan world). So I brought home a new Dart pump which will give me the flow I need, the quiet operation and economy I need too. No wonder everyone loves that place...great customer service, terrific patients with me and my needs...Thanks To Dan and the Critter!
