return pump ?s, mag 9.5 or 12?

Looking for a return pump for the 125. I was thinking of going with a mag 9.5 (93watts) it would be around 750gph at my head height of 4-5'. Does that sound sufficient?

Also, is it alright to run a SQWD on the sump return or should that only be used on a closed loop?

Thanks,
Lee

I am running a mag 12 on my 90, and I have to throttle it way down to about half of the power with around 4 to 5' of head height. I only have 1 overflow though as well.

I agree with ipiniowa, I have a mag 12 on mine and it's throttled WAY DOWN! But my overflow restricts me to 600gph through the 1" bulkhead. Which from everything i've read is plenty going through the sump.

I personally would only put the sqwd on the closed loop.

I'm open to other ideas as well. I would like around 800gph but anything above 600gph after restrictions will work.

Anyone used the new oceanrunners?

I assume you're going with a submersible return?

Check out the eheims, a little more money but supposed to be the best!

I have 2 overflow options, I have the cpr 100 (800gph 1" bulkhead) and the cpr 102(1200gph 2- 1" bulkheads).

I really wish I could afford the eheim 1262.

You can save a lot of money by not depending on your return pump for water flow. You don't need that much turnover from your sump, 500 gph on most tanks is plenty.

Design your water motion in you tank separate from the return. Closed loops have no head loss and only friction loss making much more efficient use of the pump. With a closed loop you can look into Oceans Motions. There are also a lot of great pumps out there from low end seio's to high end tunze's. Ice cap also came out with a cool pump and I saw Bullet playing with one of the moded maxijet. You can also go all out and get a wavebox.

You don't need a lot of turnover from the sump if your water motion is generated in your tank.

PS, I hate SQWD. You will loose a lot of water flow to those things.

I agree with Marcus for the most part. I like the SCWD. It is what it is. Its $30 the a OM 4-way is a whole lot nice but like 10X as much.
Back to what I agree on You really don't need to rip the water thru your overflow. It waste alot of electric for no gain(head loss). Low turn over and CL or powerheads are the way to go energy wise. Beside with the CPR overflows it good to have a little extra headroom.

Anyway the oceanrunner are great pumps quite, fairly cool, and more energy effiecent than like rated Mag Drives. Plus the Ocean runners don't have any screws that rust like the Mags

I decided that since I worked 2 shifts on the 4th that I am gonna splurge and get a better pump... so anything up to about $150.

Does anyone have experience with the blueline NS 800? 900gph @ 40 watts is pretty much unbeatable.

THe other pump I'm looking at is the eheim 1262 (800 something gph @ 80 watts)
