Return pump too strong?

Ok, so I have a sixty five gallon aqueon with a built in overflow and a twenty gallon long sump. My return pump is a quiet one 4000 rated at over 1000gph. Everything has been fine till tonight. My sump has three sections a protein skimmer, then a refuge then the return section. Up until tonight everything has been fine. Water level was right at the tee in my durso pipe. Tank was running well. Tonight I added 10 pounds of sand to my refuge section. All that had been in there before was some rubble rock. Now every since I added the sand the water level in my return section has been very low and the water level in my tank has been way over the durso pipe even over the hole I have drilled in the top for air is coveted by water. If the return pump has been fine up until I added the sand why is it acting up now? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Pump is currently turned off till problem is fixed.

Nope, this really baffles me. Was just fine an hour before I added the sand. Now the pipe is acting like it can't keep up with the flow.
