return splitting

I have a 40g breeder and i'm using a mag 9.5 for the return pump. i was wondering if i could split the line to run my 15g frag system? do you think enough flow would still be provided in the display and also in the frag tank? Another question is, since the frag tank return is lower than the display, will more flow go to the frag tank than the display?

thanks

You should split it off, a mag 9.5 is probably to much flow through a sump for a 40B. If you need more flow, add powerheads. I would add a ball valve after the split to control how much flow goes into the frag tank.

You don't need a lot of flow going from your sump to your display (the recommended amount is anywhere from 3-10x per hour (display tank turnover) so at the max end of this you would need around 400gph, which I think the Mag 9.5 can handle Anything in excess is not necessary because I assume you have other source of flow in your tank (powerheads, etc...)

So yes, you could split the return to your frag tank and display, and with a valve on both outputs, you can adjust the amount of water you want to each fairly easily, even if they are at different heights.

HTH.
