Returning to what I love - My new 180 Rimless

Hey Jon,
I dose vodka now and im thinking about switching to vinegar or some sort of mix of the two. How much more vinegar would I dose compared to vodka. I know you mentioned how much you use, but im looking to start back from the beginning and slowly work my way back up. Where should I start with the vinegar compared to where I started with Vodka?
Thanks.

Hey Brett,

Vodka is 8 times as strong as vinegar as a carbon source. Use that to calculate how much you need based on your tank volume. Just times your initial vodka dosage by eight and that should do it.

You're welcome man. Still dragging on it Bro. They look so good, I'm having a hard time taking the chance of stressing them out. Otherwise, the tank is doing pretty good. I decided to start dripping Kalk for top-off last night. So far, so good..

Well, I finally decided to start dosing kalk as my topoff.. So far, so good.. The tank is benefitting from a much needed jump in PH. It's no longer dipping under 8 at night and goes as high as 8.3 in the day time. The whole process was very easy to implement. Instead of my old mag pump connected for my topoff, I now use an aqualifter, which is doing a great job for 11 bucks! The corals seem to be enjoying it after a almost 2 weeks. Here are few post weekly WC pics from today..

Your coral look great man. I have the same problem with my PH but im scared of automation. I keep hearing too many stories of peoples pumps going faulty and dumping a bunch of kalk all at once. All always thanks for sharing your experiences with chickens like me.

Thanks Gents! Brett, it was very simple. It took an old-head in the hobby to show me how really simple it is. I decided to dose 24/7 with my Reef Fanatic auto topoff vs. only at night like many folks do. Doing it this way made it much easier for me.. The Reef Fanatic has a backup cutoff float just in case things go wrong with the main float.. It makes it fairly bullet proof. I just had to make sure the siphon breaks when the Aqualifter turns off. I initially had an issue, but quickly found a really cool solution on RC that worked like a charm. I could have used my Profilux doser as well, but that scared me in that you have to assume you evaporate the same amount every day. I know the daily evaporation rate is not consistent.. Using an auto topoff, ensures that you will only get in what went out and will work like a charm around the change in seasons. Kalk would definitely solve your issue..

May I ask where you got the $500 efflo frag? I had one on order the other day from ATL but they called me to tell me they aren't stocking them much anymore. I ended up getting their ATL Intense Purple Efflo.

I got it locally. Send a PM to "mgny" he's in Wantagh. A great guy with some really nice frags and a wealth of knowledge.

I like the updated pictures, they seem to be more clear than the last batch. Did you get a new camera lens?

Thank you. These pictures were taken with my Canon 2.8 fixed 100 lens.. This lens is pretty amazing.. The last pics were taken with the kit lens (28-135.. less amazing, but OK providing the lighting is really good).

Thank you so much, I will get in contact with him :)

You're welcome James!

Sweet...........Nice collection...........

Thank you:)

Hey Sonny! Thanks Man.. I switched up the lights... I pulled the UVL antinic white and a blue special and replaced them with a fiji purple and another blue plus... I'm liking the look. I'll post a full tank shot later tonight.. Thanks for the suggestions!

Jon,
Would you mind explaining your Kalk/auto top off method a little more in detail. You may have to dumb it down for me a little cause I am not familiar at all with either. My PH is always low and my calcium/Alk always seem like they could use a little boost as well. Not to mention 2 part is really eating up my wallet.

Sure.. It doesn't get easier than this... I like simple automation so here's how I did it. BTW, this was suggested by reputable reefers here on RC. I use a reef fanatic ATO, which has two float switches that plunge on to the inside of my sump.. Switch 1 is set at where the desired water level is in the sump and switch 2 is about an inch above that, which acts as a a cutoff switch in case the first switch gets stuck or something (This is your fail-safe). I then have an aqua-lifter pump plugged into the reef fanatic that gets turned on every time the sump level drops enough to engage the auto topoff. The suction line of the Auq-lifter is inserted into my topoff container through the lid of the container where I drilled a hole just large enough for the tube to slide through and the other line is fed into my sump. To mix the kalk, I wait for my RO/DI unit to completely fill my topofff container, then I close the gate valve between the RO/DI unit and my topoff container so that it does not put any fresh water into the container as the topoff water begins to drop from being dosed into the tank. I then take a teaspoon and dump 1 - 2 teaspoons per gallon of topoff water into the topoff container. I then cover it up and allow a mag pump to mix it up for just a few minutes.. Once it settles for for about three hours or so, I plug in my Reef fanatic Auto Topoff unit and let it do its thing! That's it.. When it's time to do it all over again. I fill another container with Ro/DI the day before and transfer it over to the mixing bucket when it's ready for me to replenish it.. There are 4 important things to remember. #1 You should not allow any sludge from the bottom of the topoff container to be sucked into your aquarium (Simply stick the tubing that goes into your topoff bucket into a very short piece of drilled 1.5 inch PVC. That will ensure that the tube never hits the bottom of the container). That sludge is the stuff that could not dissolve and has a very high ph. #2 always keep a lid on your topoff container because room CO2 will be absorbed and render your concoction less effective.. #3 You don't have to mix again until it is time to make a fresh batch. #4 Don't worry about mixing too much kalk because only up to 2 teaspoons per gallon of water can dissolve. Whatever is left will settle at the bottom and be there for the next time you mix. Trust me, this will do the trick for you with PH while giving you the benefit of balanced CAL/ALK while binding phosphates in your system.. All pluses in my book. I would not come off the two part all together, because it's hard to keep up with CAL/ALK demands on a grown-out reef with Kalk alone. But, you will be able to cut down the amount of two part you are using. After running for a week or so, test your levels and adjust your two-part from there. I know this was a lot, but it should explain everything. Feel free to ask any additional questions you have and good luck if you decide to go for it.

Sounds like a win win to me as far as positive reasons to go for it. Really would solve most of my problems. How large of a top off container do you use? I go through like 3-4 gallons a day on average. One more? OT. Did you ever have any issues with diatoms with MB7 or Vodka. I dont know what is causing this stuff but I cant beat it. In most cases, silicates would be to blame but I have no idea where they would be coming from. As always thanks for all the help, it is really appreciated. Glad to hear the kalk is working for you.
