So I'm hoping to take down my 90 next weekend and get my 120 up and running. I was planning on reusing the 2-3 in sand bed from the 90 in the new tank (put new sand on the bottom and put the old sand on top to make it a 4 inch bed)
I've been hearing that reusing an established sand bed may not be such a good idea due to the gunk that can/will be released into the tank. All my livestock is at an LFS at the moment and they will be staying there while the tank recycles. The rock is all in a trash can with saltwater "cooking". I am planning on the tank cycling before I bring my fish and corals back home. The 90 is currently still running with just the sand in it (to keep it alive until I'm ready to move the tank & set up the new one)
Since the tank will not have fish and corals for several weeks yet, can I still use the old sandbed? Will whatever gets released into the tank from the old sand bed simply cause a cycle? Perhaps I could stir up the sand bed today so the gunky water will get drained off when I do the actual tank move (next weekend)?
