Reusing sand for fuge?

My mom is upgrading from a 29gal to a 90gal. The 29gal will be turned into a sump. My question is, can we reuse the sand in there as sand for the refugium part of the sump? The 29gal has been set up for over a year, the sand is black Hawaiian. We'd try and keep it as undisturbed as possible. I know if preferable to use new sand in the display, but can't really find anything on info for fuges... We'll probably put all the sand in a rubbermaid bin, while we build the sump. The 90gal is already up and cycling. I believe there's 50lbs or so, a semi-shallow bed, 2-3 inches. Probably would be a DSB in the fuge.

This is just our first 'upgrade' as opposed to just another tank and am totally unsure.

Thanks
Shawn

absolutely--great idea----any trapped nitrates and phosphates will fuel the growth of your cheato.

the biological properties of the sand still will be used by the total water column.
