Review - AquaMaxx Magnus DC Pumps

I just got the 6000 to run couple things in my system. Hoping for complete silence. I redid my sump and used a sicce sdc pump for my main tank and 40 gallon breeder and it makes a loud low hum from my garage cause that's where sump is. I hate it. So hoping that the sun pole is quite and I'll just run 2 of them.

Is it vibrating up against something? Also is it hard plumbed?

One thing to remember with DC pumps --- they do NOT do well with head pressure --
unless you are willing to get a Red Dragon or Abyzz pump.
Generation 1 on many pumps did not last --ask me how I know--

Not up against anything 1 90 2 tees only 5 foot to returns. I'm running my 200 gal and my 40 breeder off of it. Only have SICCE running 1/3 of power. My apex says it's drawing 41 Watts. So I don't think it's under much pressure. Yes hard plumbed but switching over to 1 inch silicon hose up out of sump to see if it helps. I'm going to plumb the 6000 in to the same line to see how it does.

The pump is silent. That said, estimating head loss is not always straight-forward and intuitive. I thought I was going to be around 13-15ft... after I installed the pump, I was closer to 18 and that was right near the max spec for the pump. You should be able to estimate the head loss based on your sicce pump -- if you can figure out the flow rate you are currently getting. I liked the looks of the aquamaxx pumps. I was just disappointed that I didn't size it properly. MarineDepot really helped me out quite a bit.

Well flow doesn't matter to me. I have about 340 total gallons. All I care is tanks get 2-3 turn over hour. Silence is way more important.

Based on what you wrote, I'm guessing you are between 2-3meters of head. You should be ok. You won't hear the pump. I hear the water flow through the pipes more than the pump itself. It sounds like a shower is constantly running in the house (not very loud). My scenario was very different.

You'll find when you add the silicone tubing bridging between the hard plumbing, it will help a little. Which Sicce model do you have?
Keep us informed on how well the new pump will stack up against the Sicce.

Another quick followup. MarineDepot has been in touch with me several times and we are working towards a great outcome. I'm very grateful. I'm going to try one of the Aquamaxx VSG 12000 pumps in place of the Aquamaxx Magnus 9000. It will take a few weeks to make this exchange since the larger pump is not currently in stock.

I'm glad to hear MD communicating well with other customers. I think that higher pump upgrade will help your plumbing setup.

MD has been working with me, too. I sent back pump controller and should receive replacement later today. I recorded video in case they wanted to hear humming noise issue and see auto shutoff feeding button wasn't working. But calling them and explaining problems was enough to start RMA process.

Agree. Pleasantly surprised. I hope the pump will help. I'll also modify the plumbing. I'll post results when I get the pump.

Controller arrived, connected and powered on. OMG! It's quiet again, no more humming sound. And auto-feeder shut off button works, too!

Despite shipping issues, in the end, everything worked out. All my fish are accounted for and appear well.

Thanks to Christian for all his help during the whole RMA replacement transaction! I'm happy again.

Not surprised. The units are very quiet. If you are not dealing with a lot of head loss, they are quite good. Still waiting for the larger unit to arrive in stock at MD.

As a CON, what about impeller replacement? could not find any.

Wonder what their bearing set up is like on the impeller.

I want to go DC but its hard to beat an Iwaki for a basement pump that's been running a decade with no issue at all.

I ended up going with a Sicce SDC 9.0.
It is a larger pump -- but identical power draw at 85Watts.
The aquamax Magnus 9000 was producing a flow rate of 278G/Hr.
The Sicce was producing about 510 G/hr.

I'm going to work on the plumbing of my return to reduce head loss.

That said. The aquamax is quieter for sure. The Sicce generates more vibration along the the pvc pipes. I think some of that can be solved by adding a piece of silicone tubing at the exit of the pump. Both are decent pumps.

Yep I have the sicce also and it's loud. I'm not happy with it. Low loud hum. I've even used a silicon hose to try to take the hum out. I'll be selling it as soon as the bigger aqua max is in stock again.

I don't think I would call it loud. It is about as loud as my vortechs. It is just noticeable. The aquamax was dead silent. That said, I am running the Sicce at full power and it is moving a lot more water and it is more efficient from a power stand point. I probably should back off the Sicce to the same flow rate for a comparison. Magnus 12000 will consume 150 Watts in comparison to 85 Watts. The 12000 is rated for higher flow, but I found it drops off faster with head loss.

I think the aquamax is great for an under the tank application. I'm not sold on the basement sump application quite yet.
