Rhinopias

I haven't seen that many rhinopias for sale in general, let alone a rhinopias aphanes. They are the rarest rhino in the industry. They are also thousands of dollars. I think your best bet would be to look for a frondosa or an eschmyeri.

Ive seen two over the past 25yrs. They are rare in the wild and even more rare for collections.Worse the collectors and wholesalers know what they have when these fish are collected, so you'll pay tipity top price.
As mentioned considered a nice R frondosa.

As Frank mentioned, Merlet's scorpionfish is a top dollar fish...as in a couple of thousand or so, I suspect.

We've been in the "scorp game" for several years, and have never even HEARD of R. aphanes for sale in that time (otherwise, we'd be keeping one). It's going to be a matter of keeping your ears and eyes open, and checking around. Also, you want to always have a QT up and running, or at least one that can be set up quickly, as you'll need to pull the trigger without delay.

The main differences between frondosa and aphanes is aphanes has shorter, thicker dorsal spines and of course, body pattern. The complex body pattern of the Merlet's is thought to be a Crinoid mimic pattern, whereas the "weedy" is more of an algae mimic.

Also, as Frank mentioned, keeping a really nice frondosa is awfully breathtaking...

Greg your scorpion is amazing looking the colors on him are awesome. Where did u get yours if u don't mind me asking. What are good tankmates for them my only concern is my juvenile emperor.

Three of the four Rhinos we've kept have come from LFS, and another from BZA. The one in the photo came from the LFS.

By emperor, do you mean emperor angelfish? If so, angels, tangs, and any browsing fish aren't a good fit for scorps, as they often resemble rocks or macro algae. These fish are constantly 'picking' at the rockwork, and would stress the scorp out to the point of it becoming sick. I actually know someone who tried keeping a tang with one and the scorp ended up stressed to death.

HTH

Yes my emperor angel. Thats ok there isn't much info out there about keeping them in the home. I wont risk my angelfish. This gives me a reason to buy another tank. I want to do a pred tank and cane across that guy and had to have it. I will just keep an eye out for one ask my lfs if he could find one. Are there any special requirements that they need? What would make good tankmates or would it just be better to buy a couple of these guys and let them be by themselves

The fish in the photo roomed with our adult P. volitans for quite awhile.

You could keep them with other peaceful fish, as long as they can't be swallowed, but as I've mentioned, no "grazers/browsers" (tangs, angels, triggers, puffers).

Greg that has got to be one of my all time favorite fish, i show people the photos on LL quite frequently and breathtaking hardly does them justice!thanks for sharing :D

Thanks for the link but something like that i would prefer a site that has some kind of reputation and definitely wysiwyg. I think for an investment like that i def need to see what im getting.
