Paininthewrasse,
Sorry for the delay in responding; I wanted to so some thorough research today on this coral. Rhizotrochus typus are very rare in the US for good reasons.
It is my understanding that there are no CITES quotas listed for the collection of this coral out of Bali or Jakarta, which means that they can not be imported into the US under that exact genus and species from these two major coral export locations.
There are no legal exports out of the Philippines for CITES corals or clams in well over 15 years. Although there are a few CITES corals entering the trade from Australia legally, I have never seen Rhizotrochus available. The export lists from the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, and Tonga do not show Rhizos available either, and I see these stock lists from all of the above mentioned locales on a weekly basis. Furthermore, there are no CITES quotas listed for any of these above mentioned locations for the harvesting of this genus and species of coral either.
From what I can find out, US Fish and Wildlife has no record of Rhizotrochus typus in their database of imported genera and species of corals that enter the US with the proper CITES documents. According to their comprehensive database, Rhizotrochus typus has never entered the US legally with the proper CITES permits, through the normal channels or ports of entry into the US.
I have heard countless stories this year of smuggled coral entering the US, being sold on the net, and through retail establishments. This practice is highly illegal.
There is already plenty of scrutiny on the marine fish and coral trade as it stands, and smuggled corals just adds more ammunition to the people who seek to further regulate or shut down the marine aquarium trade.
I encourage everyone interested in obtaining one of these corals, to please verify that what you are purchasing was legally imported into the US with the proper CITES permits in order to make sure that we all do our part in not supporting the rapidly expanding, illegal black market coral trade.
Sincerely,
