Rhizo typus feeding

I have a beautiful Rhizo that i feed every other day. It seems to love it, i typically feed a piece of krill, squid, or mussel and it takes a few hours to completely eat. I remove the rhizo from the tank in a bowl of water to feed due to fish and shrimp stealing from its mouth. This has been my only successful way to feed the rhizo.

Now to my question. I'm leaving on vacation for 7 days soon. I have someone coming by to feed my fish, but he will not be able to feed the rhizo. I plan to feed it every day for 3 days prior to leaving to hopefully fatten it up a little. Do you think it will be ok not eating for 7 days??

I dont know squat about rhizos but I cannot fathom a coral that coulnt go seven days without direct feeding. I would bet money it will be fine. Especially if you feed it the day before you leave.

The reason you have to feed a Rhizo is because it lacks zooxanthanelle therefore gets no energy from light. I would try to get your caretaker to feed at least once while you are gone, preferably twice or more. Put it in your sump or something for easy feeding. Also they can use something smaller like mysis shrimp or cyclop-eeze that the rhizo would be able to eat relatively fast. Some food is better than none. If it doesn't get fed for a week I doubt it would die, but it would probably be in sorry shape when you get home.

Post some pics.

Hmm might be a good idea to keep it in the sump. Not much flow though, i wonder if that would pose a problem? I'll have to try a few things. Thanks for the suggestion.

i have see different reactions from the rhizo from not feeding it, i know of people not feeding there rhizo for a month, but the tentacles where stretching from the bottom of the tank to the top. i personally have went a week and a half with out feeding it and it did fine, actually got some good extension on the tentacles. but if you are really worried i would feed it a good little mix i found, get the freeze dried cyclopeeze and mix it with a protein supplement and mix it into a paste. put it into a syringe and feed it directly. less mess, more food for your rhizo and i know it will live on that for a week if you feed it that three days in a row. let me know how it works out for you.

Mike, now this is rhizo thread. :D

My rhizo, shot yesterday.

I fed it about every two weeks with raw fish. I put it in mid flow and low light.

Thanks for all the responses. I feel much better leaving it for a week. I'm not gonna try putting it in the sump. I use kalk in my topoff and my sump is 20gal filled with about 12-15gal, so the infusion of FW/kalk into the smaller water volume scares me more than not feeding for a week.

Mine has gone thru periods with almost no extension, then some with great extension. Anyone know why they extend or don't extend?

Angus...your dendro looks great, never seen a color like that before.

Impur I think the polyp extention has to do with the feeding. When they want food they reach out for it.
