Ric Frags

How long do ricordea frags generally take to attach? I fragged my ricordeas about 1 1/2 weeks ago and put them in a container full of rubble rock and covered it with tulle and haven't really checked them out since...should they be attached by now?

I think your leading the path here, i have only seen one person actually frag his rics.
I think they should be attached, check them and let us know. Also it would be interesting to know how you did it and so on.

I did that with both green and orange ones. The green only took a few days and the orange about a week. If they even picked up a small piece you can then use super glue gel to attach them to a bigger rock.

I just basically took a clean razor blade and made an even (or as close as you can get) clean slice through the Ric's makeing sure I got at least part of a mouth on each frag. It wasn't too hard...hopefully I did a good job and the frags are attaching, the parent ric's are already healing up and growing new sections to replace the ones they lost. I'll let you know how they look :-).

Reading here over 6 months(and scanning at least the last couple years of posts), I've never seen anyone post pics of the parent or the fragged piece. Would be great to see them.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but here is a piece of Orange Florida Ricordia I am splitting today! As a bonus it has a red mushroom that I am going to put on a separate piece.

I just sliced the red mushroom off the rock, laid it on another rock, and covered it with netting to hold it there till it attaches.

I used a razor blade to cut the ricordia almost in half leaving each half a mouth, then cut one of the halves off the rock, and left the other half attached to the original rock.

Original rock!

I am really diggin those rics bud, its good to know your proping it...

Thanks! I just recently set up a 20L just for my corals. I've moved all my recently purchased zoa frags and pieces of my mushrooms and rics into it. My plan is to put any corals I get in it first, allow them to grow to where I can frag off some and then put the frags in my tank. That way I'll have them in two locations in case anything happens to either tank.

OK.. here is "my" story.

Keeping a teenie tiny reef tank (10G). Been going for about 6 months. I'm a total newbie, cord still attached even. :-) (So please.. be kind.)

Purchased my first Ric about 3 wks ago. The LR had about 3 on it, xenia and another leather thing on it. I didn't like where 2 of the rics were on the rock, so I used a sharp pair of scissors, and carefully cut them off, sliced the tiny things into two, and put them on a chuck of dead coral skeleton (from a long ago FW tank), and used a piece of media bag and rubber band to hold them on. After about 9 days, took the bag off, and 3 of the 4 pieces were secured. (the other one fell off and got lost in the LR).

They are doing great. Been about 19 days now, and they are coming into their own shape and beginning to look like baby Rics!

Yipee.. My first prop attempt a success. Call the 12 step program! I'm an addict now!

Here are some pics I took below of my experience....

Here is where the 2 rics were on the wierd piece of LR I purchased. They were in a bad spot for me, on the right lower side.

Cut them off.., sliced them & here they are secured with a media bag and rubber bands.

took about 9 - 11 days to secure to base, and this pic was taken a few days thereafter, showing attachment.

This is what they look like today...

(and here is my entire mini setup. the ric frags are on the upper right.... on the white coral base) Some of the green stuff at the bottom, and on the barnacle's skeleton is Maiden's hair algae. (looks bad in this pic.)

OK.. THAT was my own I did. Give or take. The mesh stuff that Bud's Reef had was better. I'll have to save that stuff next time I get some onions or something at the store! The mesh I used worked, but was what I had on hand, and had to make sure not to have air pockets that could collect under that mesh. A wider/finer mesh would have been better.

OK.. Stop the press!

Just found that little escape~ee ric frag that fell off the base I put it on! (That I mentioned earlier.)

It was attached on the bottom corner glass of the tank! It was still doing well, not as colorful or full as its mates because it was under a bunch of stuff, but formed well, circular, with a mouth of its own now!

Yee~haa!

Just re~secured it to the base I put the others on. I'm leaving that mesh on this one for at least 10 - 12 days! It won't escape again!

(Sigh.. happy endings! With the cost of these little hummers, can you see why I'm excited I found it??!!!)

Very nice! Glad you found the missing one. My very first attempt at getting them to stay in place wasn't very successful. I used a little tighter weave of netting and two very small pieces just melted away. Now if they are really small I just throw them in a cup with rubble across the bottom and wait for them to attach to a piece of rubble and then glue them in place.

HA! Never thought of putting them in a cup, in the tank! I'll have to remember that one. (did I think they would float away??? )

Before I started with the mesh, I was racking my brain how to attach it to some rubble, but still give it circulation, without it wandering away. I had a couple things, but they wouldn't get the circulation, so I went with the mesh.

Sometimes, the simplest things (like the cup in the tank idea) seem to be elusive when I think about it too much.

Oh well.. the little sucker is tied on the base with the mesh cut from a cheap media bag. It is doing good so far.

Thanks for the cup idea Bud's Reef! I'll remember that for next time.

oh i got bored so i made some small frags .. just cut out little parts of the mother ric .. i made 6 little frags .. these heal in a week .. and usually grow a mouth at the end of their second week.

http://img518.imageshack.us/my.php?image=image017pv6.jpg

u can see how tiny they are .. takes about 3-4 weeks for them to be the size of a nickle.

did these little pieces have part of the mouth attached to them?

some of mine did, one didn't. They all are doing well. The one without the mouth is taking a bit more time, but is doing well. The ones WITH the mouth are developing a bit faster.
