Ric Frags

You'd think with as easy as these are to frag / propagate .. they wouldn't be so darn expensive "per polyp" at the LFS. I guess growing them out to size is the big thing.

Mine are finally about the size of a dime now (pushing it a bit), but are just starting to take off growth wise. Girth is increasing weekly now I can see. So they are just taking off.

I found the piece without the mouth did do great, just took longer than the rest to develop. But it is about the same now as the others, just a couple hairs smaller.

This is addictive!

Here is a visual update of the Ric frags...

Here are the little frag cut offs I took pics of today (8-9-07).. The one I "found" that was originally without a mouth, is on the upper right...

And here again... is the foundling.. the one that was just a piece to start off with, without a mouth. Now you see it has one...

for size comparison.. here they are in my little nano system.. (upper right by the shrimp).....

I usually quarter rics when I frag them. One caveat on using the cup idea - I used a clear plastic "deli" container (kind of like a wide-mouth cup) with sand and reef rubble in it for the rics to attach to. I left it there a long time and ended up with about 10 rics attached to the plastic deli container sides. Moral of the story - don't leave the rics in your attaching container indefinitely, and pay attention to what they're attaching to. :D

Saw the thread and figured i'd do the ric fragging i've been putting off. I have a few rics that came off their rocks and have been laying around the tank.

The ric i fragged is on the left, regular green/orange with 2 mouths

cut in 2 and put on a frag plug. The bigger half was attached to a small shell so i was able to glue it to the plug. Smaller half couldn't glue so used mesh

Don't you just love those frag discs? I have those and the plugs, but the plugs aren't as heavy as the discs and can drift around a bit while on the egg crate. One good push by a fish or snail, and away they go.
I also just put my tiny ric frag on a disc today, just like yours. =D

I actually just got these disks about 2 weeks ago and really like them. They are called "reefrocks" and are kind of shaped like a little island. Bigger and heavier than disks or plugs so the snails cant really move them.

I got them from oceanwondersonline.com. Highly recommend the "reefrocks" and "textured reef disks" that they have.

YUP! That is where I got mine from. I like them alot!!! I just mounted 2 little mushroom toadstools on them. I had the mushroom frags and the ric frags in little shallow cups, but they were moving around too much to attach. One of the toadstool frags polyps began to emerge right away after I mounted it.

I forgot that I had these discs until I went searching for something else and found them. It was like Christmas. LOL!

i cut one of my oramge yumas in half the other day, keep your fingers crossed

My orange yumas like the ones you got are almost gone. The 4 smaller ones are in the process of melting. The big one is still holding strong though. No more yuma's for me, sticking with rics from here on.

I had a 2-mouth orange ric that I fragged onto 5 pieces. I lost all but 1. So, rics melt too. I may have done something wrong. It may have been too small to fras into that many pieces.
Oh well. The rock it came off of is now growing a new ric (with 2 mouths) and it looks like another one is beginning to grow also.
So, maybre I get 4 now, but have to wait longer to grow. =D

The ones i did last night are both looking pretty good. Obviously, way too early to know but they sure don't look like they are going to melt. You can barely even tell that i cut them last night.

I'll get a pic in a little bit, my camera battery is recharging from my blue carpet anemone soap opera thats going on:o
