Ricordea Killed my Sea Hare! unbelievable

This evening I noticed that my group of three ricordeas were entangled in some brown stuff. I thought it was a rock that had fallen inbetween them. I gently pried them apart ( they are attached to small stones and not a base rock) and much to my surprize they were attempting to eat Fred, My sea hare! :eek2: I suspect Fred must have crawled inbetween them and they probably stung him to death. You can see the lining of the mouth of the ricordea attemting to devour him. The other scavengers are also waiting to get a peice of him. I didn't realize rics can be that vicious.

No Fred most definatly wandered into your Rics & got the S@%T stung out of him. I have had this happen to 2 seahares of mine & they were almost half way devowered by the time I noticed. The sting of florida ricordia is whopping, I found this out while grabbing one with an open paper cut on my finger...felt like some one snipped off the tip of my finger with a bolt cutter.

maybe that was because you dipped an open wound in salt water? LOL

my florida rics have retreated from zoanthids, green star polyps, and even had xenia grown up against it... on the relative scale of nematocyst strength, it does not seem to possess much.

just my 2cents

Hey thanks for the Bio! I think I know the differance between a salt sting & a coral punch. In retrospect yes the sting cannot penatrate the skin but for a fleshy animal like a seahair it's like throwing salt on a snail.

yeah, my fire shrimp crawls all over the rics to steal their food when I feed them, but the nassarius snails seem to get stung so they won't try to steal their food. Poor Fred, I feel bad. He had so much personality for a sea hare.

And somewhat dangerous...depending on the size of the sea hare. So glad it's not worse!
