Background:
I bought Dave's Aguqafuge. It fits perfectly over the lip of my acrylic sump. The sump originally engineered with the left side configured and filled with BioBalls. The bottom is covered with a plastic, waffle grate. The ideal water level sits just above the level of the grate.
Question:
1. What pump would your recommend I buy for the Aquafuge?
2. Based on the pump, would it be better to try to rig an extender piece of tubing down through the waffle grate or cut out a section of waffle grating and try to submerge the pump? (If the pump were to sit on top of the grate, it would be in a very short column of water.)

P.S. Sorry for not posting a picture (my Dell lap top showed me the "blue screen of death" and is not working!).....where's Andy!!!
