Right size Tunze for 105 gal

Roger,

I am setting up a 105 gal reef. The tank is 48" wide by 28.5" tall and only 18" front to back.

I want to keep LPS and soft corals. I might consider a few SPS in the future, but it is predominantly a lower circulation tank than a SPS tank. I also plan to keep clams, scallops and other inverts.

I expect to achieve 8x turnover in tank to sump circulation, and I am planning a 6" deep sand bed.

1. Would the 6010 Turbelle kit be appropriate for this tank?

2. Would that create a sandstorm out of the DSB?

3. Can I get enough randomness in the current?

Thanks for your help.

Use the 6010 with a Sea Swirl, it will work and you will get a very random effect as the Stream will pulse and the Swirl will oscillate. The Stream 6010 can be turned down and I don#t think you will have a problem- please forgive any errors, german has more letters and the keyboard has a third shift.

Great, and thanks.

I hesitate on the Sea Swirl for two reasons:

1. They are expensive
2. I heard they can break easily

What about a SCWD device? Any experience with these?

Oh yeah,

And do you know of people using the Turbelle with a deep sand bed without burying their inverts?

Thanks

Ask Endymion. I personally see no real advantage to fine sand and am not sold on DSB in general. I use 2" of 2mm aragonite and have no nitrate present. I am sure many other users have this set up as at least in America DSB is very popular. You will be able to adjust the electronic Turbelle or Electronic Stream as required to avoid stirring up the sand. The pumps swival and can be raised or lowered and the flow dialed in between 600 and 1850gph on the 6010. The Sea Swirl can brake but that is just part of any machine, a Stream can brake for that matter and so can a Rolls Royce or a Mercedes. The differnece is the service and the availability of spare parts after warranty. They have very good service at Sea Swirl, like me they are a one man operation and you know who you will be speaking with. I have no experience with the SKWD, I am a gadget guy but I don't jump on every new fad and I know how often my oscillating sprinkler and car wash brush break and these are built in a similar way and work with clean tap water so I am skeptical and don't think the results are the same.

You bring up some good points. What is the warranty on the stream? What kind of service can I expect? What kind of maintenance is need on the device?

Thanks for all your help.

2 year warranty. I think if you follow some threads you can see our service. We are a small family company with 32 worldwide employees. Don't expect a walmart money back guarantee but I can repair or replace just about anything and the only things that aren't covered are abuse and neglect- i.e. water damage of electronics and just generally not following directions. Service life- that depends. I go one year between cleaning, most people that have problems over do everything and don't seem to realize that after a certain point no more calcium or buffer can be dissolved in a system, the pumps have tight tolerances and debris and lime precipitate are not condusive to long service lives. The electonic pumps are particularly difficult to ruin as an alarm notifies you of any obstruction and shuts down the power to the pump.

Sorry djasper99 but I want to jump in here if that's ok.

Roger, I have the same set-up as you can see in my sig, but my tank is predominately SPS with only two LPS on the sandbed. The tank is 16 months old and I have been looking for an alternative to my closed loop. I have seen these pumps in action -- nothing compares in the industry.

I would ideally like two 6100s on each end facing the other, with the multicontroller (6110?) to turn them down. I am opting for the stronger pumps because I have future plans for a longer tank. ;) What else would I need ie. mounting brackets? Am I incorrect in my logic? When might these pumps become available?

I'm at work now but I will try to post a photo of my tank in the AM.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

You would want to order kit TS24 two 6100 Streams and a 7094 multicontroller. The 6100's are coming in but for just about all models I only get 20 every other week and I think some models are backordered pretty far back. I will get some multicontrollers next week- those were shipped on the 21st. As for the holders i would have to know what type of tank you have.

Sorry Roger; it's an Oceanic 105rr. It is in my sig.;) I'm not sure of the glass thickness anymore.

So the TS24 is the kit I should order, and the multicontroller is a seperate purchase. Do you know which vendor may be getting the next shipments?!? "Pretty far back" seems like a long time...

Mike

The TS24 includes the multicontroller- two pumps and controller. I really don't know how far behind the vendors are. I get about 20 pumps and a half dozen multis every 2-3weeks on average. This should improve because demand in Europe drops considerably in the summer. For an Oceanic you will also need 2 3000.244 install kits- these are about $3.25ea.

Thanks for the replies. I was looking at marinedepot's web site and did not see a listing for "TS24." It might be there but I couldn't find it. Who else do you list as a vendor? Do you think that this would be the correct/optimal setup for me?

Thanks again,
Mike

I would call but their is no discount it is just for ordering convenience. You could order 2 6100 and a 7094 and get the same thing. Champion and Premium also carry the products.
