rimless problems

Woke up today to find my Ruby Red Dragonet went carpet surfing. I never expected him to jump but that is the problem with a rimless tank.

X, i also have a rimless and have a screen sitting on it. don't know if you remember? I have a little extra screen if you want to build one. you just have to buy the frame.
It doesn't mess up the clean look too bad, i guess i'm just use to seeing it on the tank.
I usually set it aside when i'm working or viewing the tank.

Sorry to hear about your fish. :sad1:

Rimless looks great, but it's only a matter of time (even with blennys, clowns, cardinals) that fish will jump. I lost a lot of fish to the carpet before I gave in. If you do true rimless all the time, don't get fish. Otherwise, use a drop-in screen that is low profile or even an egg crate top when you're not around the tank.

Not sure where I will go as far as a top, I don't intend to have many fish in this tank and to be honest if they jump then thats what happens. Got my 2 clowns and I will get another Ruby Red but thats probably all I want. I am open to suggestions but lets remember its a 20x20x20 rimless tank. I only have the fish I have because acro's love fish poo.

I've seen some of Vanillas build progress in person, going to be top notch as it comes together. I can't wait to see it!

On topic though, I also run a screen as pictured above on my rimless. I don't have it recessed, however I am using a maxspect razor light with their tank brackets and my screen fits between them perfectly.

Home Depot sells the frame, pretty cheap and easy to do. Worth the investment. Mine has been on for over a yr and is holding up well.

Here is mine. Used clear BRS netting and eplastics.com for the acrylic channel

I kept a helfrichi fire fish in my rimless for 2 years with no problems, the key was slowly ramping my LED's off and on. The day I switched back to metal halide, he was startled when the light rapidly shutoff and he jumped out. Thankfully I was there watching and was able to put him back in the tank. For the next few nights I made sure I was there to stop him when the light went off. Unfortunately I had to go out of town one night and came home expecting to see him on the ground and sure enough there he was all dried up. Just wish I could of rehomed him before his final jump.
