rinsing gravel bed

I am helping a friend move his reef aquarium this evening and need to rinse his gravel bed, ( he hasnt kept up w/ it lately and there is a decent amount of algae/glass anenomes growing on the bed). Any suggestions on how to go about this?

remove then sand and fill up a bucket with the dirty sand. Use a hose and run water through the sand until it runs clear. Churn the sand slowly every now and then to clean the sand at the bottom of the bucket. Once the water continuously runs clear after churning then repeat with more dirty sand. It's a tedious process but will yield great results. Hope this helps.
