Rinsing Live sand???

...I am in the process of setting up a new tank. Im doing a small upgrade from a 24g nanocube to a 46g bowfront.

I recieved a 5g bucket almost completley full or sugar sized live sand from a local reefer to fill my new tank. My question is should I rinse it first? I opened the top and it smells really bad :hmm3:

Should I just rinse it in fresh RODI water first? Will that help?

TIA!

wouldnt hurt... If you have an RODI unit, i would put the tube in the bottom of the sand and turn on the unit for about an hour and let the top water just run off.

I'd do nothing with it...the smell is all the good bacteria in there... :-)
Definitely agree here. You do not want to rinse it. You rinse non-live sand to get all of the dirt/dust out of it. If you rinse live sand it will no longer be live. The bad smell is the dead bacteria from not receiving oxygen. I would dump out all the water that the sand is in then place it in your tank, and add new water on top of it.
