Rio 6HF powerhead.

I swapped this out for a MJ1200 for the greater flow and fewer watts but its a bit louder. I have determined that its not from the pump vibrating against the sides of the chamber as that makes a totally different sound. I placed a block of filter foam under the pump to help quiet it...not sure if its helping or not.

I like the increased flow and the idea of less heat put into the tank but the system went from being nearly dead silent to a low hum.

Does anyone know if this pump quiets as it breaks in?

I think I remember the MJ1200 being a bit noisy initially as well until it got a few days under its belt.

Anyone?

I just put a rio 6hf in my biocube and it is totally silent. Maybe recheck the impeller for debris, or get another one. I am very happy with the flow as well. HTH

Thanks for the quick reply. Maybe I will try a run in a bucket of water and see what I get. Perhaps there is a vibration that I can somehow stop.

ghost- why did you trade out the stcok pump and when? I have a 6 wk old BC and am wondering if I need to increase the flow.

I was unimpressed with the flow rating of the stock pump and got some dead spots in the tank. I am not a fan of the hydors and wanted more flow. The Rio puts out about 100g more per hour and that sounded good to me. I did the nanotuners lighting upgrade at the same time, and am very impressed with it as well. I highly recommend it as well.
