RIO pump problems

I have heard people say RIO's are good and I've heard others say they are bad. What does everyone here have to say about the RIO 3100 and RIO 2100? Give me the good, bad, and ugly.

I have two Rio's on my system. 1700 for my skimmer & 2500 on for my return. They do work & only recently has my 2500 didn't restart but once cleaned it's been fine.

They will soon be in the closet as spares & be replaced by Quiet One pumps. They're quiet, priced right & have a pretty good rep.

I've got both. Never had a problem since 2003. 2100 is in my protein skimmer. And the 3100 is like a power head, with a short pvc tub, with a 90 pipe. I had the 1700, for my protein skimmer, first, and I had nothing but problems. It's like when we lose power for a moment. It would not start back up unless I tap on it. Sometimes a hard tap. I got tired of it and threw I away.

I had a 3100 burn up after about 8 months of use. Granted this was years ago.

I did pick-up a hyperflow, but was not real impressed with it. I since have switched brands.

i have a 2100,2500 and the HF26 for about 4 years without a problem. 2100 is for circulation behind LR,2500 on skimmer and HF as return

i bought a mag9.5 to use as return but the output was nothing like Rio so its now on a closed loop

Rio's have THEE worst rep for frying tanks.
I wouldn't use for anything but mixing SW.
Those that claim no probs have just been very lucky.

I've heard other people talk about tanks being fried. What's causing that to happen? Does RIO plan on addressing the problem?

I also have a few in a bucket - collecting dust. I never had a problem after years of use. After reading of a few fried tanks, I pulled all mine, and replaced them a few years ago. I think they changed designs, so, I'm not sure if a new one has the same hazards as the old ones. I personally won't use them in my tanks, or ever buy one again, unless more than 1 person can prove otherwise that they are fixed, and have years of proof. Just my opinion, I wouldn't use them.
