I lost my emporer angel (this is him-looked nice didn't he?)
DSCN0638.jpg

last night due to carelessness and laziness. I didn't qt this fish as I have not qt'd with any of my last 8 new additions(Naso, hippo, 4 chromis, lunar wrasse, snowflake eel) over a year long period. I had great success not doing so as all fish lived successfully with only minor scratching upon introduction and very little aggression.

But this guy brought the scurge from hell down on my tank. He looked fine in the lfs and even was eating prettly well just a little shy but most fish are in those baron wasteland tanks. Well he developed flukes, ick, popeye and even handed out some internal parasites to my other fish. I lost a chromis, my rusty angel looks like franken fish and most fish are scratching repeatedly on rocks and my naso got a pinched belly which I attribute to internal parasites. I was overfeeding to try to get this angel to eat and now I have hair algae all over my tank. My lunar was trying to eat the parasites off all my fish but is way beyond the stage of doing this and now has nasty teeth so was tearing fins apart left and right. My tank is a living nightmare now all because I thought I was special and didn't have to qt. Well let me tell you it is not an option but a neccessity. Not only did I cost this poor fella and others their lives I also flushed $120. Anyways just a warning to all who don't think they need to qt sooner or later it will get you.

Large angels are especially known to carry many parasites and diseases. Sorry to hear about your loss.

I'm sorry for your loss. :(

I've been holding off on new fish that I really want because I'm working on my new qt. After reading that, I'm really glad I didn't add anything yet. I've been a week or so away from breaking down and getting a pygmy angel.

New qt is 3x bigger, a 30BR, and is going to be a true QT instead of a QT/HT/frankentank. If nothing else, at least something good came out of your loss. :(

I feel your pain, I had a Regal Angel introduce velvet into my tank. (this after 3 weeks in Cupramine). Needless to say it wiped out almost my entire tank. The surviving fish, a false Perc. and chrysurus Angel have been in a QT since. I can not get rid of the velvet on the Angel, even after almost a month of consistent Cupramine use. I would hate to have to euthanize the angel, but the velvet will not go away. I completely broke down the DT and emptied it and am starting to thing the Chrysurus will not see the DT again.

wow,so sorry about your losses.Your post should be required reading for all here on RC,from the newbies,to the old timers.

I had my 40 QT,set up and cycled berfore my 240 was even plumbed and running. When i returned to the hobby,( way of life?),i made myself a promise,i would never lose another fish to ich, flukes, velvet, internal parasites again.

The whole setup including tank, heater, and Aquaclear 70,was less than $125.00.Cheap insurance, and peace of mind.

And if there are fish that cant survive 6 to 8 weeks in QT,then maybe we should not even attempt to keep them.

Strange...
How do you dose the cupramine and with what test brand are you checking for Cu?

I have heard that large angels don't do well with copper treatments that it actually weakens them and makes them sicker. That is part of the reason I never thought to qt him. I have been doing this 5 years and since my second year I have only lost one fish until now and that was a chromis which must have been real sick from the store. I qt'd from the second year until the 4th year with mixed results as far as fish stress but never lost any because of qting. But I will never ever not qt from now forward.

Cupramine is safe for Angels and most other fish. Other forms of copper can damage or kill angels and butterflies. I have been using it consistently for almost a month, dosing every two weeks. I use the seachem test, which some swear by, but i feel it is inaccurate. For example, I have nothing in the QT to absorb the copper, yet after i test it there is a minimal reading of copper in the water (maybe like .2 or .3 on the scale).

Like jnc914 said. Cupramine is much less toxic to fish than other coppers. I use it on all my fish, exactly for the reason you have just found out, and even on fish that have been labeled "copper sensitive." I've never seen any issues with a single angel (or any other fish) using Cupramine.

The Seahcem Cu test is surely not a test I would rely on.
Try to get Merck.
Dosing every 2 weeks is not enough, you have to maintain a stable 0.5ppm and tst it every single day.
