I acquired a Rit from a person who was moving and had to get rid of it. It was healthy, seemingly happy, etc.
I placed the Rit in my tank about 1/2 way down.
Here's tank specs:
150 Gallon Display
50 Gallon Sump
30 Gallon Water Change Station
(3)400w MH Bulbs
Ph. 8.3
Nitrates: 0
Nitrites: 0
Phosphates: 0
Amonia: 0
Calcium: 480
I placed the Rit 1/2 way (about 15" deep, and about 22" from Lights). All was well for about a week, then I started noticing that the Anemone was shrinking/deflating just a little bit. The little bit kept adding up and soon the Rit was about 2/3 it's original size.
I have MASSIVE flow in my tank. Most of which I had "intermittently" directed at the Rit. It never moved from it's original location that I placed it in the tank. (I think because of the flow conditions).
Yesterday, I borrowed a PAR meter from a friend to check out my lighting. Directly below the light bulb it read 1327. That seems great! However, 2" below the water surface that number was cut to 630. At the 15" depth the Rit was at, it was only 168 Then at the bottom of the tank it was about 95. I couldn't believe the difference in available light.
I took it apon myself to move the Rit to the very top of my rock work (about 5 inches below the surface)....IMMEDIATELY, the anemone started re-inflating and almost reaching for the light. I redirected my Power Heads to put the Rit back in the path, and within about 2 hours the Rit was back to it's original size. Although it's current location wasn't my first choice, it did seem to make a HUGE difference.
I wanted to post this experience because I think a lot people (myself included) would be DEVESTATED by the actual PAR readings in their tank. These Rits definitely need the light.
If anyone is wondering what kind of flow this thing seems to like.....
(3) Koralia 4 (1200 gph each)
(1) Rio 1920 gph on wavemaker
(2) Max Jet 1200 on wavemaker
Koralia's run constantly, and the others are set on the wavemaker at about 30 seconds run time each.
That much current makes your tank look like a toilet flushing
... Just kidding, it actually looks pretty natural except there are definitely places in the tank that clown fish have give a little extra umph..to get where they want to go.
