Riverpack 600

2006

I ran the Riverpack in my 20 gallon reef aquarium for one month to seed the granovit. Then I transferred the Riverpack, water and live rock (six small to medium sized pieces) to a new 50 gallon tank. The new tank is bare bottom.

So far so good but nitrate has been creeping up for six weeks and is at 20 ppm. The flow to the reactor is 7 gph. I tried 5 gph for a week with no luck.

Any suggestions to get my nitrate down.

It takes several months for the anaerobic bacteria to establish. The aerobic bacteria establish first. In about 3 months the anaerobic bacteria will begin to develop. In the meantime, I would just do water changes, however you could look into dosing a small amount of Vodka, this is something I have not tired but it would provide the carbon the anaerobic bacteria need. There are numerous threads about this on RC.
