Whats the best RO/DI unit i can buy to service a 75-90 gallon tank? and do i need them both or can i just use an RO unit?

I can't answer as to the best. I bought mine from freedrinkingwater.com I have it plumbed to my facet for drinking water also.

I can answer about the DI. The DI isn't needed for a successful SW tank. However it couldn't hurt and is still something that can be added on at a later date. DI is a stage after the water is created by the RO. Get a RO unit first and then then read up and decide later if you want to add a DI when you have the extra money.

I think if you are going to get a unit, you will most likely need to get an RO/DI. From what I have read, phosphates and silicates get through the RO membrane. The DI will take care of those. The main reason for the RO is to get as much stuff as possible before the DI stage and thus extending the life of the DI resin. The more stuff that gets through, the faster you'll go through the resin. At normal household water pressure, the Dow Filmtec membrane (75gpd) has the best rejection characteristics, and units with those membranes are highly recommended by most here on RC. I have a 75gpd Typhoon unit from www.airwaterice.com, and highly recommend it.

I currently have a 75 gallon tank similar to you, and I use the Coralife Pure-Flo II that does 50gpd. It has the DI unit and has nothing short of exceeded all of my expectations. I used to use just plain tap water, and finally I saved and purchased this R/O unit. Another plus, is the Pure-Flo II is often less expensive than competing models, but with the same if not better performance. This is what I would recommend to you. Good luck!

airwaterice Typhoon units are great, so are the Kent units. Just make sure that whatever you buy, it has a refillable Horizontal DI cartridge and uses a DOW 75 GPH RO membrane. You wont find that on EBay units, that's why they are not recommended by most.

RobbyG, I think you may have meant vertical DI cartridge instead of horizontal. The horizontal unit channels and doesn't use all the DI resin effectively.

I just got an Typhoon III from airwaterice.com. I had another brand from a local water company and the Typhoon III blows it away.

I have Typhoon III but I would check out purelyH20, an RC sponsor that was very helpful when I had problems with installing the Typhoon.

I would check out the Optima series from www.purelyh2o.com too. I looked into it and the pricing/features of the Optima Chloramine Advanced made it the better decision for me over the Typhoon III. I'm sure both units will treat your right though.

Thought I'd post it here... I just bought my Optima CA from www.purelyh2o.com and talked with Bryan. He hooked me up with this coupon for 15% off. This was last week so i dont know how many uses are left if any. He said that there were 10 or so uses left on it... good luck:
