I have a kent Maxxima 4 stage 24 GPD Ro/DI unit. i want/need to replace the filters on it since i have been running it a long time. Does anyone know where to get the filters without it costing me an arm and a leg? i originally purchased the unit from petsolutions but with their prices i am looking at over a hundred bucks to replace all the filters???? Do i need to replace all of the filters???

thanks in advance!!!!!
Nick

might also want to pick up a tds meter. I bought an in-line on new on ebay for $20. Now I can watch my readings and change when appropriate.

Nick as long as the TDS is 10% of that of the raw tap water it should'nt need replacing yet. I suggest before laying out the cash for new filters to pick up a $20 TDS meter. The filters usually last 1 year, The di-ion resin 1 year, and the r/o membrain 2-5 yrs.

oh really...i was under the impression that they should be changed every 6 months...i have a tds meter and it still reads 0 but i figured that since it has been 9 months or so it was time to replace...i also have a flush kit hooked up, i noticed that water production has slowed a little so that also prompted my inquiry????

Nick.....all good advise, don't go by how many gallons made or a time frame because the filters will only make so many gallons and last so long depending on how bad the orginal water going in is. If the flow is slowing, but still reads 0 check the pre filter it may need replacing.

Thanks everyone!!!!
Mike...what would i check on the prefilter? the 1st filter is a dark orange/brown looking color?

If the first filter is the sediment filter that sounds like rust from the water. I have to replace mine every 3 mo or so because of that...

Also is it ok to use the water if it is at 10% reading of my raw water as someone here suggested, because if it gets to that I always replace the the prefilter and carbon block and it usually goes from 005 back to 001 on my TDS meter. My raw water reads 052 on my TDS meter...

I would recommend that you change your sediment and carbon filter every 6 months.
Unless you have a way of measuring gallonage through your carbon filter, (avg 3000 gallons for a standard carbon filter) I would just stay on the safe side of 6 months which is recommended by most RO unit manufacturers. Also the reason why you should be carefull with the carbon block filter is because chlorine will destroy your RO membrane which is the most costly part to replace.
On the sediment filter, I would also go with 6 months unless you have well water which might clog the filter a little quicker. The other way to determine when your sediment filter needs to be changed is if you have a inline pressure guage to see when the pressure drops off due to clogging.
And as everyone else had mentioned, your RO membrane needs to be determined by measuring your output vs your incoming raw water for TDS.

thanks everyone!!!!

okay i took out the info packet it came with...stage 1-1 micron sediment filter, 2-matrix carbon, 3- membrane filtration (what is this, it sits on top in the white tube), 4- mixed bed deion resin cartridge( is this the DI). so i should replace 1,2,4 but not 3?????
water comin in is 42 and 0 on the way out, based on the TDS meter

i plan to order a pressure gauge, with the filters...

i have had this thing for a while and as you can tell i dont know much about it...so i appreciate the help:)

Nick,
What kind of TDS meter are you using? Does it need to be calibrated? Have you done so recently?

Larry,
i purchased the same TDS meter that lonnie got on ebay...it came calibrated and i was supposed to get extra calibration fluid but it never came, even after repeated emails...

anyone buy from Reef Exotics????

That meter should be giving you an accurate reading. Calibration is never a bad thing, though, and you might just find yourself very surprised by the results.
I have ordered from Tony on a number of occasions. I have only positive experience to relate.

A good place to purchase replacement filters is filterdirect.com. I just orderd some, very reasonable. Tested my water with a TDS and it was 21. Great for drinking, probably not really too bad, but 0 is always best!
