Ro/di how much waste??

I dont remember my RO/DI giving of so much waste? anyone know the ratio? I know it will take about 85 minutes in the winter to make 5 gallons but the waste line is a steady stream and seems excessive.

3 or 4 gallons waste to 1 gallon pure is normal at about 70 degrees. You'll get more waste with colder water temps.

After setting up my ro unit i never noticed an increase in my bill. Even if u make 200 gallons of water a month that's nothing compared to the thousands of gallons normally use a month

It depends on your RO/DI. I have a 1:1 ratio unit so I waste one gallon for every gallon made. These units are more expensive but I think worth it. .

Is it the media or the whole system that determines the ratio?

wow! didn't know that much water wastes from the ro unit, i remember drilling the drain and connecting the ro unite. might start to collect the waste water for laundry or my garden.

I just upgraded my BRS 75 gpd unit with the add on membrane and I am now making 150 gpd. I noticed a huge difference in waste water. It is not quite 1 to 1 but close to it now.

What unit do you have? I'd like to get one with lower waste water like this.

at work i got a huge ro unit 8gp with 2g of waste water. the membranes are in series, there is a recirculation of the waste water back into the input with a valve to adjust the amount of waste that goes down the drain. My production is fine at home with my kent ro, but i think if you were to put another membrane on the first's membranes waste with the restrictor after the second membrane it would increase your "recovery" (RO). im not sure what restricting the waste more than the built in restrictor. it may shorten the life of the membrane

This is the unit that I have

I used a lot of water when I was breeding the seahorses as a business.. They also make this in a 100gpd.

Another trick to help make water quicker in the winter months is to run your water line (the one that is coming from your supply and going into the RO/DI) through a bucket of water with a heater in it. You need to have some extra tubing on the water source so that you can bunch it up and the water is in the bucket for a little bit so it can heat up before it feeds in to the ro.

Can you link to this just in case so I don't purchase the wrong one by mistake?
Mine is a brs 75gpd but membrane is 2-3 years old now

Thanks. I think the 100 gpd looks like a good option for me. And the booster pump will be a benefit considering my low water pressure.

Thanks for the tip for raising source water pressure, too. That's an easy way to increase efficiency!
