RO/DI Maintenance Confusion

So I have been using my BRS 5 Stage RO/DI system and it has worked great for me...however am I over cleaning/changing the carbon, Resin etc to much?

I usually run the system till i see a 1 or 2 pop up on the TDS meter by this time the Resin has turned a light brown and no longer black/blue. When I change the resin I change the other 3 canisters as well this includes: micron filter, granulated carbon, and carbon block. The micron filter is still perfectly white, as far as the carbon and carbon block i cant tell if they are depleted they still look exactly the same as when I installed them.

My main question I guess is am I throwing away good money replacing all the carbon and micron filter when I can just replace the Resin? If so what would maintenance schedules or signs to replace the other 3 filter canisters? BRS states you should replace the resin and all filters together when you get a TDS reading of 1... or are they just trying to sell me more product? :eek2:

I would swap out the resin at that point, but that should be able to bring your TDS back down to 0 without change the 3 canisters.

The DI resin is changed whenever you get breakthrough, just as you are doing. The sediment and carbon pre-filters change frequency depends on the quality of your incoming water and how much water you make. You should be able to see a visible change in the color of your sediment filter and the BRS unit also has a pressure gauge downstream of the filters. If you see this pressure start decreasing it is time to change your filters. I personally change all the pre-filters on a 6 month schedule even though i don't see physical indicators. I just like to be sure I am not getting chloramine breakthrough which would damage the RO membrane.
