Hey guys, i am looking at getting this system from The Filter Guys
$ 199.00 - OCEAN REEF + 1 FIVE STAGE 75 GPD RO/DI
sorry, there isn't a like for that specific filter, but here is the link to the page it's on.
http://www.thefilterguys.biz/ro_di_systems.htm

I was wondering if you guys think it would be a good option for me, 75 gal per day is way more than i need but oh well.

I was also wondering if any of you have figured out what your cost per gallon is when you calculate all your consumables involved. I get my water at Pets Playhouse for 29 cents a gallon for just RO, and Mike tells me that it would cost me way more than that if i had my own system.

Here is a link to the water quality report of Cedar Rapids if that helps any.

Thank you guys.

Have you tested the water you are buying? If its just RO, water from an RO/DI will be much better, so its not really a fair comparison. Even with cartridge changes, you should still come out better making your own.

It should better cheaper and better water out of your own unit. You will save enough time and gas money having this in house to make it more than worth it. You can also use it to make drinking water for your family.

Not to mention no more lugging water jugs around! I had a tank set up for about 2 years before i just broke down and bought my own RO/DI unit and it was definately worth it. Looking back i cant believe i went so long without one.

Depending on your requirements you might even consider a 50gpd unit. Their rejection rate is normally a little higher, which would save you a touch on the actual cost per gallon by lowering your DI consumption.

Make sure to talt to the guys there at Filter Guys. They are good people and will help you out on making sure you get the right cartridges to meet the requirements based on your local water supply, i.e. filters for cholormines if used, etc.

Thank you guys.

If they're making money selling water to you - then you can presumably save money by doing it yourself...and it'll be ro/di so better than RO only.

Also I don't know that you need the one you listed - I think I got the next step down (plus a DI bypass for drinking water which we've yet to use  ) I would definitely suggest calling and discussing your needs with them - they're great guys to work with and won't steer you wrong.

It seems to me that there are only a few manufacturers of the actual RO/DI supplies but different vendors package/price on their own.

Good point. Try to find a unit with a Filmtec membrane. They are higher quality and have a higher rejection rate which just means it saves you money and makes cleaner water before using your expensive DI resin to polish it to 0 TDS.

Thank you guys.

I have the same unit from the Filter guys, and truthfully they have some of the best service when i need to order replacement filters. When I first bought my unit I called them and they talked to me for had to be a half an hour not knowing whether they would be a sale or not. Just answerring generic questions.

Ditto on the filter guys. They are great and will go the extra mile. If you email Jim a question he seems to always calls you the next morning to make sure you are getting exactly what you need. You may be able to save a little money somewhere but good service is hard to come by and these guys have Great service!

I, too, have the same unit. The filter guys are a standout seller in every way.

From that unit, I have a tds of 2 entering my DI and 0 out. It will last a while. I lugged 5 gallon jugs of RO for several months prior, and it's way too easy now to make even better water at home.

You've got to figure you're spending gas, extra short trip wear on your vehicle, and your own time running to the store to pick it up as well. IMO worth every penny.

I just purchased this very unit from Filter Guys. It should arrive on Tues or Wed of this week. As far as the price per gallon, I think that not lugging the buckets anymore is a good enough of an advantage. The tds of the supposed ro/di water that I had been purchasing was not much better that the tap water at my home.

Yeah, thats a very common story with "purchased" water, you would think that by charging money and making a profit, one could maintain their equipment, but most don't.

I didn't mention this in my earlier post, but I do HIGHLY recommend the Filter Guys, you cant go wrong with them.

I don't know exactly what it costs me to make 0 tds rodi, but it isn't much more (if anything) than what you are paying (and that is without the gas money to pick up the water). In my opinion using RO water is just like using tap water, except things just creep up a bit slower. The person telling you it would cost "way more" to have your own system is either uninformed, trying to sell you something, or both. I consider an rodi unit to be more important than even a skimmer in maintaining good water quality.

Hey if you do need some water i have some in cedar rapids, near washington high school. Let me know. The drive over is probably better then paying 29 cents a gallon. Let me know before hand so i will have the right amount of water

One thing you can do to lower cost of running a RO/DI unit is to run the waste into your washing machine. As for which RO/DI the filter guys do have great customer service. There are only a few mfg's that make the membranes for the RO and the DI is pretty much the same with them all.
