It's how many Gallons Per Day the unit will produce.

ahhh.... what would you suggest for a 55 gallon tank (new to this don't know much)

It really depends on your use of water for water changes, top off and etc. A very common RO/DI unit gpd measurement or output is a 75gpd. They also have higher 100gpd units also.

The 100 gpd membranes tend not to work as well as the 75 gpd membranes, which can increase the cost of DI cartridges, so I'd stick with 75 gpd or lower.

as mentioned it really comes down to how much water your going to use and if you have a way of storing water.

If you can store a bit of water you can just get a lower rated unit and set it up to top off a reservoir and use it when you need.

If you don't have a way to store water one of the higher GPH units could be an advantage as you won't have to wait so long for it to produce the amount of water you need.

There is no advantage to purchasing anything less than a 75 GPD RO/DI unit. They usually cost just the same or more, are the same physical size, make water 50% or more slower and are no more efficient as far as water quality. Get a 75 GPD Dow Filmtec membrane in whatever system you purchase.
