RO/DI systems

Was just wondering what the bare basic RO/DI system i could get for my tank would be. I am cycling now and just used treated tap water(i know i know).
Its a 40 breeder with 20 sump. I could use either a hose from the yard or the kitchen sink to supply water so it must be able to hook to that.
I use a 32 gal brute and 5 gal bucket for water mixing and making water.
Thinking the cheapest option is the brs 4 stage for 149.99.

I also know i need to find out about my water to see if i have whichever chlorine product for the actual filters. Thats on the way in the mail.

thanks for any help

I am very happy with my Reefkeeper 5 stage unit from Air Water and Ice. Spectrapure also makes excellent units, but costs more. I have both types and use the Air Water and Ice units (one for purified water we drink, the other system to make RO/DI for reef and discus).

I bought spectrapure. I'm happy with it and the customer service. Air water and ice has gotten praise and also bulk reef supply has a range for various budgets and needs, and includes man connectors and extras. No tax and free shipping and their prices value make them hard to beat. I've only owned spectrapure.

the mighty 50gph unit looks perfect. not sure if i would need any connectors or not. its not likeill be doing 60 gal water changes.

I have owned numerous systems, and finally bought a Spectrapure Refurbed 4 stage and have since up graded to a Maxcap which I am very happy with. With the cheaper systems you go through filter replacements a lot more often

IMO the best bang for buck is the Spectrapure Refurbed 4 stage. One thing to remember is Spectrapure is a dedicated water purification company and has been in business for over 30 yrs, they also make peristaltic dosing pumps and ATO systems which are top notch

I bought the maxcap. I waited for a deal on marinedepot and got it on discount (this brand is not one of the excluded price fixed brands like ecotech) so whenever they have a coupon...fire away.

I got the one that does 90gpd. manual flash.

Its upgradeable in future if you want to go 180 or auto flush.

Seems high quality to me...but without experience to compare...i'm just assuming.

The stats they post on their filters along with the review responses from people here made it seem like a smart choice that will eventually save me money and ensure quality water.

Don't forget about a pump!!! No one told me that originally. If you have low PSI you might need one to get optimal flow. If you don't have optimal flow you will be wasting water for sure.

Call up spectrapure or air and ice and talk to them about your needs. Spectrapure website has a bunch of refurbished available like what azjohnny mentioned.

The pump if you need one is industry standard that can be found at marine depot or brs or most places.

I put my vote in for the reburb spectrapure. They are more expensive on the parts so it might be better to order the unit from them and then order the sink adapter from BRS. You should also invest in a handheld tds meter which will cost around $25.

Are you in a house or apartment? If you have a washer hookup, you can just hook it up there. That is what I do. I then have the waste water going down the same pipe as the water from the washing machine. There are lots of options on how to hook it up. Some people do it in their bathrooms and have the water containers in the bathtub. Works great if you forget about them and they overflow.

+1 on BRS. I use the 5 stage 150gpd. Like someone else said free shipping, no tax and it comes with everything you need including covering all the hookup options like sink, hose or saddle. Seriously though as long as they come with good filters and membranes they are a simple mechanical unit and really not much to go wrong other than maybe the tds meter dying. So there really is not much basis for one brand better than another. Maybe Spectrapure has a slightly better membrane than the GE used by most. I had a Kent years ago and it was basically as good as what I have now and did what it needed to do.
