RO/DI Unit - Water Quality Question

The purified water that comes out of my RO/DI recently slowed down to a trickle. I started messing around with the unit and found that when I take the RO membrane out of the system it puts out the normal amount of water at a TDS or 5. I’m assuming that I need a new RO membrane.

Will I experience any adverse tank reactions adding 5 TDS water that hasn’t been run through the RO membrane? It'll be about a week before I have a new RO membrane and need to top off.

That's incredibly clean water if it's right out of your tap. You sure that wasn't some permeate that was still in some of the tubing? The TDS won't decrease much compared to tapwater just from your sediment/carbon prefilters.

dipan: I'm sure the 5 TDS water isn't left over water from the tubing.

At the moment I have the system set up to run though the sediment filter, carbon filter and then the DI resin filter.

My tap water is about 150 TDS. So those 3 filters must be pulling out the 145 or so in solids.

I'm thinking that 5 TDS water will probably be fine for a week. I will only have to put about 5 gallons in and put off a water change for a week.

Any opinions are appreciated.

You should keep an eye on the quality of the output. You may exhaust the DI resin pretty quickly without the RO membrane. You will certainly shorten the life of the resin.

But I wouldn't worry about the effect of 5 ppm on the tank short term.
