when i set my 30 gal tank up all i used was tap water and never had any probs just your typical cycle and that was all, Could it be that i just have good tap water??

Yeah some tap tap water is of better quality than others. In my area tap water isn't all that bad but I still sleep better at night using RO water from a local store until I get an RO/DI system.

Depending on your tap source it can be OK for some FO tanks. Silicates, nitrates, phosphates and metals (and maybe other things I don't even klnow about or how to test for) make it a bad long term choice for reeftanks IMO. Especially when you think of topoff water and evap steadily increasing the concentration of everything. It can lead to serious diatom, algae or poisoning issues down the road

Just wait for the 3-6 month period when diatoms, cyano, and hair algae are the plague in the tank. Tough part is the pollutants and phosphates have leeched in to the rocks and sand, and will not go away despite your every attempt! In my tap water starter tank I was gold for 3 months, then cyano, then hair algae. I tried EVERYTHING in the book on getting rid of it, but the tank was the problem. Cyano was only a 4-6 month battle, hait algae is still there a year later, but very slim, almost gone.

Good Luck! ( I would start diluting the TAP fast!)
