RO/DI water smells.

My clean water from my RO/DI has a bad smell to it. Is this normal?? It is being stored in a Rubbermaid Brute container and the waste water is also. The waste water does not stink as the "clean" water does. Anybody know what is going on?

maybe it's got some airborne contamminate in it.. It shouldn't smell at all. as it's been "stripped" by the RO / DI of everything that could "smell" as you make it yourself, as opposed to buying it, it's only worth a couple of cents a gallon... dump it out, rinse the container with bleach, rinse it again and re fill it.. or ... add the bleach to the water in it and then dump it out rinse thoroughly , rinse again and see what hapopens..

The water is at 0 TDS. I rinsed both containers when I bought them. It has a musty or moldy smell to me. I guess that I will try and re-rinse the containers?

I already dumped what is in the container and am going to bleach it and start over and we will see if the smell comes back or not. It is weird that the waste water does not have any odor but the clean water did. Could the water that is sitting in the RO/DI unit be going stale? Does everyone flush there RO/DI everytime they make water?

Your waste water has a lot of chlorine which will keep any mold from growing in it. Any RO/DI left out is vulnerable to mold/bacteria.

It's probably not so much the water in the ro/di unit going stale as (I'm guessing) bacteria in the ro/di unit growing on the filtering substances and the stuff that has been filtered out.

I think I read something about that somewhere, but I don't really recall.

I was informed a while back that the unused portion of the RO/DI water in a vat will start to contaminate. Thats after I reported a white slimy film on my hose coming from the internal pump inside the vat. So I rinse and clean mine out once every six months.
Thats why I can't understand why some people put their RO/DI vats so high up or unaccessible/plumbed and glued all together. Doesn't take me five minutes to get mine empty and disconnected to get it cleaned.

Tell you what, take a glass of the RO side and smell it, and then a glass of the DI side which is the water you use for your tank, and do the same. You will notice a musky dull dry smell in the DI glass. Its probably something you would question if you had some water in your frig and you smelled it first. That is a normal smell for the DI side of the RO/DI system. But if you've smelled what I'm talking about before coming from the DI water, and now you smell something new or more rotten, then you have something else going on, as mentioned above.

Oh yeah ,buddy hit a good point, if your around close while your making water, and the out line/waste water is close to you, ooooweeee, thats some stinky water

One of my tanks has a topoff container that I never add Kalk to. The water is clear but has a bit of a musty smell to it but has never caused any issues. The topoff reservoir I do add the Kalkwasser to does not have that smell, so it's probably related to a "sterilizing" effect of the Kalkwasser.

Remember that your waste water has been through your carbon block - so the chlorine has been removed.
