Hey, i am looking to buy a ro/di for my house becuase i am having trouble with dioatomand algae. i am looking for the best rodi unit for under 400-500 dollers. can i use the water from the rodi for drinking water for the family to? also my house is very old so will it clean the water? also whats the best brand? how many stages? and how many GPD? thanks for the hrlp everyone?

GPD will depend on how much demand you need for your tank and how much water your family drinks. Your budget of 400-500 dollars allows for a lot of options.

I have a three stage unit made by water general. I bought it two years ago on ebay. My tds reading has always been "0". Just changed the carbon filters after two years! 139.00 complete.

My preference is Spectrapure. The Maxcap, CSPDI, or Maxpure would work great for you (I have the Maxcap). You can use the water for drinking (I have) but doubt you will like the taste. Most filtered water bottlers add minerals for taste after the filtration process. 0 TDS water has a wierd taste (atleast to me).

i like rodi 0 TDS water, i am making water all the time for me. and BRS has great RODI systems.

I don't know as I have never had the water from that source (we don't have them in my area).

You will want to be drinking the RO water, not the RO/DI. The RO/DI water should be used for the tank.

it dosent matter. when im making 10 gallons a week at most for everything. i would spend a few more hours makeing some drinking water

It depends on how much water you use to make a decision. How much water you need to make for you tank? How much water your family consumes daily? etc... You will want to look for a system that utilizes a good quality RO membrane with a high rejection rate. Stages will depend on the water quality in your city. A basic 4-stage system with RO membrane, sediment, carbon, DI resin stages is a good start. You can get drinking water "kits" that have a small pressure tank to store water and have an auto shutoff valve for the supply. As stated above this is connected before the DI stage. I don't have one so I can't comment on taste. I have seen a similar system sold at Lowes.

It shouldn't be as long as you have been eating right and getting minerals, etc. from the foods you eat and other beverages you drink.

Check out http://www.airwaterice.com/ for the Typhoon III system. It is under $300 and it has a valve so you can do RO in a tank for drinking (which is very good by the way) or RO/DI water for your reef tank.
