I like the one that comes from purelyH2O it can come with an inline TDS and automatic shut off system if you want to add it. Most RO/DIs are the same imo it really does not matter if you buy name brand. Just make sure it comes with a good RO membrane ie DOW.
I also like the RO systems that have clear housing, it makes it easier to see when the filters need changed.

What makes an RO membrane a "good one"? And what is DOW?

How does the unit connect to the faucet? Are all connectors the same? Would it fit a tub spigot or does it have to be smaller, like, a sink faucet?
Are the filters universal or do I have to buy a specific replacement filter from the manufacturer?

Generally, the lower the GPD the more pure water it is going to create. Dow makes the Filmtec RO membrane and it is considered a good one. I'm sure there are others, that is just the one I read the most about.
I purchased an adapter for mine so it screws onto a waterhouse type connection.

Another vote for buckeyefieldsupply. The unit Carb has is a good one.
I also wouldn't hesitate to buy one from thefilterguys. Russ (Buckeye) and Jim (Filterguys) both have a reputation for outstanding customer service. They both have good prices too.
What makes a RO membrane good is its ability to remove TDS from water. The better your membrane functions the longer the DI resin will last. The Dow filmtec membrane is the best RO membrane on the market.
It's also important to have good quality pre-filters, sediment and carbon blocks, to extend the life of your RO membrane.
The clear housing is nice if you're using color changing DI resin. Another tip is to make sure your DI cartridges are refillable. Much cheaper to refill than buy new cartridges everytime.

Unless you get some "funky" unit all the filters should be universal. I've got a Spectra-pure RO/DI but all the working "parts" inside are from Buckeye.

Totally depends on the adapter(s) you get. You have the input and two output ends to consider (good and bad water). There is also the options to add a tank to hold the filtered water. Lots of options I'd go out and poke around some of the filter sites and see what is out there.

I also have a RO/DI form Buckeye and it has been flawless for over a year.

Oh yeah one thing you really want to look at is the permeate pump. It's an addon but pulls more clean water through the membrane so you have less waste water. and it pays for itself quickly in wasted water.
Also if you don't want to waste all that waste water we save it in containers (rain barrels and others) and use it to water the plants.

One of the great things about DOW membranes is that they reach their rated capacity at 10+ psi lower water pressure than their competitors.
Also - a permeate pump is only useful if your RO system uses a pressurized storage tank.

I been using the same RO/DI for a year now. I didn't make very much water as I was just doing a few small tanks during that time and water to cure rock.
Now, that I'm getting ready to setup my main display I will be swapping filters and DI resin. Do I need to take any measures with my RO membrane? I'm hoping it will be good for a little while longer.
