RO-Unit membrane "old"?

Hello everyone,

I feel bad asking a question in my first post, but I hope you don't yell at me for that.

I've got an RO unit, and I've just replaced the filters. My tds meter reads 0, so that seems to have been done right. But I just checked and I got 0.25 ammonia in the water.
The unit is about 5 years old, does that sound like I need a new membrane as well?

thanks already,
Yvonne

Welcome to RC, Questions are good.

Does your tap water have "chloramine" in it?

Chloramine is a mix of ammonia and chlorine that some towns
use to disenfect the water and the Ammonia can pass right
through the RO/DO filter.

hm, I don't think I ever had ammonia in the water. But to be honest, I never tested. It goes through a water softener before going to the RO Unit.

I thought the membrane removes the ammonia from the water? I read that somewhere...
For years I had the RO unit top off the tank, always without problems. Wouldn't I have noticed that?
