RO unit?

I have a 2 stage RO unit under my cabinet. I have started using it and it totally eliminated my algae troubles. Is there any reason to have a 4 stage with DI unit? Please give me your thoughts

YES.....The DI unit will take out the final TDS & give you a 0.0 TDS reading. This is what your looking for 0.0 TDS

ive never seen a 2 stage tbh, have you got a picture or any info on it? and as flipper you really need a di as well

I think it is like the barebones one kent sells

yes it is like the bare bones one kent sells. it is more of a home, under the sink system. still, the algae(green) problem is gone. do i still need the 4 stage with the DI ?

What exactly is DI?
How much would a good RO/DI under the sink type unit cost?

"Osmosis, according to the dictionary, is movement of a solvent through a semi-permeable membrane into a solution of higher solute concentration that tends to equalize the concentrations of solute on the two sides of the membrane. The normal flow of solvent is from the dilute solution to the concentrated solution.

This osmosis process can be understood by the following:

First separate a container into two equal sections by a semi-permeable membrane. On one side pour some distilled water and on the other side with equal volume of salt water. Leave it like that and over time, the level of the distilled water will decrease while the level of salt water will increase. So this process is called osmosis.

So it is very easy to understand Reverse Osmosis (RO) is the reverse of the above process. In order to achieve this, we need to apply pressure on the salt water side to force the water pass through the membrane. In actual application, we substitute the salt water with tap water. Most of the impurities from the tap water will be blocked by the membrane leaving a desirable purified water at the other end of the membrane. In the process a lot of water (80~90%) is wasted to drain which actually helps keep the membrane clean by flushing water over the incoming side of the membrane to remove particulates and dirt.

But reefers as us are still not satisfied with the result as the membrane can only reject 95~98% of ionic and organic impurities. The produced "clean" water still contains a little phosphate, silica, nitrate, etc. So another canister with de-ionizer (DI) resin is added at the final stage of the unit to further purify the water. The resin cartridge contains positive and negative charged polymers that interact with the contaminant to remove them. Thus 99% of pure water can be achieved."

Wow.. now that is an explanation! Thanks Captn.. makes much more sense to me now..

Does anyone know of a quality/fair priced rodi unit and where I might be able to find it?

So if your algae problems disappeared with your current unit, why would you consider additional filtration for your water? Some areas have very low TDS source water to begin with. Are you able to get information from your municipality or tap water supplier as to what the parameters are?

Though my algae problems are gone, there may still be some other impurities in the water I am topping off with. As far as getting parameters from my water provider.....Fat chance as I live in rural Southern Ohio. I am just lucky to have county water, LOL. I may want to add some softies so I think the RO/DI unit will be my next investment.

a pocket TDS meter is a good investment at 25 dollars

although you might be able to write off a new ro/di unit through your church and use it for baptismals;) :D
You don't want to be introducing heavy metals to infants at such an early age

Never thought of that... "Who would like to be baptized in 99.9% RO/DI water.?" I coulld even convince the congregation since we lose so much water during baptisms, we need an auto top-off system too. And wouldn't it feel so much more spiritual under the aura of T5 lighting...LOL... Thanks for the comments

IMO every church should have a marine tank too---I was able to convince my principals of that but never my minister;)
