Rock cooking, it does work.

I would scrub off the black and do a massive water change.
Im in the process of Curing Live Rock...not "cooking it" all though it might as well be the same damn thing. But so far the rock still looks predominantly healthy, yet Im cleaning the hell out of it.
Every other day I have been removing dead crap and scrubbing a little. In addition Im siphoning out detrietus and changing one third of the water. Every other day. It sucks. Trust me. But I wanted to try and prevent as much die off as possible while cycling this rock and I figured keeping it as clean as possible was the best way.

How long does what take?

The cooking process.

I am on my second week. I dont see too much detritus coming out.

I have been reading that this can take 6+ months. If this is the case I will probably get new LR sine the corals cannot go that long without biological filtration.

The tank however is showing signs of coraline growth. Something thats was not happening with the rock in the tank.

It does not take 6 months, that is just what some people decide to do with the rock, it takes about 2 to 2.5 depending on how many times you change the water and clean the rocks out... The more you do the close it will be to the 2 - 2.5 months time frame...

Another time is not to do 100% of your rock at once, do like a 1/3 then rotate them out once they are done "cooking"...

Also remember "new" live rock could possibly have a PO4 buildup in it as well. I recall it being recommended to cook recently purchased (better term than new in this case) live rock as well, no matter the source.

Its dead bleach it for base rock black is decomposition been there done that.

I have to disagree, its not black like death black, just a black frost, that seems to be going with every water change. anyways why would I ever bleach it out, I will just keep cooking it and once its clean I will place it in my tank.

Bad news rock is black when will the rock turn back to a clean color or look better?

Question for the guys with rock turning black. What did you provide for flow in your cooking tank. If you did provide flow how much and how large was your tank?

Question
I was given a bunch of nice shaped dead rock. It was previously in a FO tank, not sure how live the rock ever was though. It has been bone dry for several years.

The previous tank it was in did have a bioball type wet dry filter on it. So should I assume that the rock is full of @%$#%%?

Before I start using some of this rock in my brand new tank, what can I do to try to reduce the phosphates and whatever else might be harmful?

Why not just "cook" the rock to be safe. If brand new rock has crap in it, why wouldn't older rcok?

This will also give you an opportunity to cycle the rock and get some new bacterial life going on the rock. I would start the cooking process, but add a small piece of shrimp to the container, as well as a handfull of live sand from an LFS. This should get life back into the rock. Then follow the regular cooking process, until the rock is clean (based on no crap coming out when you swish and dip).

Well, let's say I just cook the rock without adding anything else. Tell me if I understand this correctly...

I am trying to get some algae or other life form to consume or draw out the nutrients that may be in the rock. Then I export these nutrients by changing the water and getting rid of the algae etc. and continue this process until there are no nutrients left to support the algae. Is that the basic idea?

that is basically the idea, but you are not only trying to get rid of the algae, but all of the PO4 and deal life in the rocks as well.
