rocks against back?

I was told to leave enough room on all four sides of the rocks to clean the glass, but I see pictures of tanks all the time in which the rockwork is against the back glass or side glass, etc. Does algae just grow freely on the glass or are there enough snails to keep it clean or what?

maybe both. I personally don't clean the back glass. I let the snails have at it. But, i do leave space between the back glass and the rock for water flow. Don't want dead spots if you can help it.

If you have enough flow in your tank I wouldnt worry about it. I have rock stacked up about 3/4 of the way up the tank and is thouching the back glass. My MP40 creates enough water movement to get behind the rocks.

that's the issue right there, making sure there's enough flow behind the rocks. If you don't have a LOT of turnover and flow, I wouldn't rest the rock against the back glass, whether u clean it or not.

Agreed^ I placed my rock islands a few inches from the back for flow. I don't get detritus build up. I also clean my back glass at least twice a week. I still get the cleanest tank ever comment on mine after 9 months :)

Agreed. My first tank ever I had the rocks against the back because I thought this is what looked the nicest. Let's just say "never again".
