rodi / basic tank question or two

Hey all, I've been browsing around the site and I'm seeing almost every tank guidelines thread mentioning a ro/di system as a requirement for your tank. I've been doing malawi cichlids my whole time around here and I've got some very allkaline hard water which they happen to thrive in so I never had to worry much about a water system.

I'm interested in starting up a 30-40g clown tank (just beginning research on how to stock and what to do differently than fresh water).

So for a very basic setup, is spending $100+ on a rodi system really neccessary? Is this more for bigger more expensive tanks? Will I have success simply using my water for a clown tank? (from what I've seen so far clowns like higher pH as well)

my water tests out at 8.4 pH and is definitely on the hard side.

Using RODI water, regardless of tank size, will help you in your battle against algae.

Don't be too concerned about people describing their RODI water as having low pH - it will assume the pH of whatever you add it to.
