RODI Drain ideas???

I just run mine to the sump pump only option it seems is a storage tank of some sort, you could use a float valve so it doesnt overflow

The unit says it comes with an auto shut off valve. Do I need a float valve to go along with this? ow does the installed auto shut off valve on the Bulk Reef Supply units work?

the saddle valve that luther put up from BRS would be great as to go on a large drain. Might consider it to go on a vent line rather than a wet drain line.

The automatic shut off valve is to 'turn' off the water to the membrane once the output off the unit is shutoff (so the unit doesn't keep flushing water). Ideally you have the unit filling a storage container with a float valve. When the contain is full, the unit shuts off preventing a flood and your not wasting waste due the ASOV.

Myself, I tee'd into the condensate from the furnace, which ends up going to the basement floor drain.

You could always use storage tank, then get another pump and plumb it up to the washroom. Wire the pump to a switch up there and fill the washer as needed. Im sure it will all pay for itself and you wont have to wait long to fill the machine.

i have 2 32 gallons rubbermaid trash cans that I use. I drilled both at the very top... put bulheads on them and vinyl tubing tubing that runs to my drain. That way, I can just leave my ro/di unit running. If the waste water fills the trash can, it will never overflow since the excess water will just do through the bulkhead and down the vinyl tubing to the drain.

The water from the output line and waste line on your RO unit should be pressurized and can be easily run back to any room/drain in the house. There is no need for storage reservoirs, pumps, switches, wires or any of that.

All you need to do is run one line down to basement from the supply to the RO unit, and one line from the basement back up to a drain/washing machine of your choice for the waste. Most likely there will be a drain near where the supply water is coming from.

you could always use the wasted water for such things as laundry and watering plants.. but you shouldn't have to sit there and babysit it running back and forth just to make sure it doesn't overflow. I did this for a couple of time and tired of getting off the couch every 30 minutes to check the status water or if i forgot, come down to a very wet basement. Luckily, I don't have a carpeted basement. Anyhow, I was thinking of extending this idea to my ro/di good water as well... have the excess run through a ballvalve that I could turn when filling it with water... if I don't catch it in time, it will overflow to a 18 gallon rubbermaid bin below the water resevoir... that way, I'm not wasting any good ro/di water

Why don't you have a auto shut off on your RODI unit? I have never used one before but I was under the impression that most RODI set ups feed a rubbermaid or can or whatever. And on the can will be a float switch which will shut down the unit.

Am I way off on this? To be honest, I am not sure how the float switch will relay the info to the unit to shut down. I am about to order a unit from Bulk Reef Supply which comes with an auto shut off installed. Only problem is that I have no idea how it will work.

Is a float needed for an RODI unit that comes with an installed auto shut off?

technically, you could but it's a bit more complicated then just putting a float swich. since the ro/di unit is pressurized, you'll need some sort of solenoid and float valve..as described here:

I haven't gotten around to setting this up yet but intend to in the near future... for the time being though, this method works for me pretty well.

Yep, doesn't need to be complicated.

My ro/di fills a container through a humidifier float valve (~$10 fr HD). When the container is full, the float closes, which in-turn shuts off the water to the ro/di through it's own ASOV. No wires, 120VAC, solenoids, controllers etc.

interesting... Das75... would you mind taking some pics of your setup and description of each phase you indicated. I'd be really interested in giving that a try.

Here is where mine drains most of the time (also drains to the sewer line next to the washing machine) . The RODI unit is in the laundry room on the other side of the wall and the waste goes here. The 55g SW mix tank in the laundry room then generates about 200g of waste. From the containers I can pump it to the washing machine or to my garden hose for use outside.
