Best thing to do would be to get a TDS meter and check the TDS of the output water.

i do not think that the DI part of the unit would be used for anything other then our aquariums since it is not very good to drink. It is probably just an ro system at your work, and that will not cut it for a reef tank since you need the di.

It's not the same. Don't use it.

The water that comes out of aquarium rodi systems is not fit for consumption since it has no nutrients etc in it.

You could test it for TDS, Chloramine, Chlorine, Ammonia and break your back lugging it around. That will get old pretty fast.

Deionized water is perfectly fit to drink. It doesn't provide and minerals, but for the most part you don't rely on water to supply your minerals. The obvious exception would be if you were on a water-fast and eating no food. It will not pull anything out of your body nor will it cause any ill effect.

It doesn't taste right. Not at all. And most people would not drink it for that reason alone.

Drinking water from your RODI that you make aquarium water with is a BAD idea because there is often some bacteria growing in the water lines. Sterilize it and it's perfectly benign.

A manufacturer or procurer of drinks may choose to use deionized water if their normal water supply is too hard. Simply put, they are adding back the appropriate things to get the taste that people want form their water. But before they add their specific dissolved contents, they wish to remove everything else that is not part of their recipe.

All that being said, the requirements for you to drink are not as stringent as they are for your aquarium water. Plus, you are going to get really tired of lugging all that water around. If your tank is of any size, a RODI unit will turn out to be a good investment.

i have an rodi unit but it takes so long to make water the one at my work could fill 20 gallons in like 1 min when at home that would take me like all day and i have to check on it all the time so it dosent overflow my waterjugs, the ones at my work like disc1 said are made to get everything out of the water so the soda syrups always taste right, but isent that the same as my rodi i have? or the one i have for my fish tank it makes a different type of water with nothing in it???

and lugging them from my work, back to car, then into the tank and or mixing containers would not be that bad id much rather do that then spend all day just making water for my tank wiht chance of overflows if i forget to check on it.

if you do not have patients, you are not fit for this hobby...

i work 2 jobs and alot of other stuff going on dedicating a day to just makeing water is a nuisance but if the filter from my work wont work as RODI water im going to invest in extending my little plastic tube coming from the rodi unit to reach the container then the flooding problem will be pretty much solved any one know how i would do that? Just cut it and attach the same size tube with super glue? or like with a little extension peice maybe ill havta go hit up ACE

Simple solution, get yourself a brute trash can and install a bulkhead and ball valve and a float switch and run your RO system in to that. Make sure you place the can on a stand so you can fit a bucket under the spigot.

+1

It will only take a few hours to get this set up and then you won't have to lug water again. I always have 30 gallons of RO on hand, which is great when i need to do a water change. I just take a bucket and dump it into another brute can and the RODI container just starts filling up again.

Also check BRS out. They have a auto shut off kit for RO/DI units. Plumb that in with yours and forget about spending any time making water. Just turn it on and it will shut itself when done. Then just add salt.

Can we assume that you've talked about this with your manager at work? You will be shortening the life of the filters, and they'll have to replace them sooner, which adds costs.

I always make run my rodi with an egg timer. Ill start it on a saturday morning, and just check it every time the timer goes off. My filter is in the basement, so this gives me an excuse to go smoke, or drink a beer.

Also if I go to leave before im done needing water, I just shut it off and start it up again when I get home. Really its not that big of an inconvience

There's no lugging jugs of water or babysitting water filters at my house ;)

+1 on the Auto shut-off valve and the storage container. I keep 30 gal of RO/DI water ready to go along with 30 gal of mixed salt water and a 30 gal Kalk reservoir that is toppe d off monthly.
