RODI water in ames

Anybody know where you can get RODI water in ames? I'm probably going to be getting a unit in the next 4 months, but in the meantime I'm tired of using treated tap water. Too many algea blooms, so if anybody knows where you can purchase some that would be great! Thanks

I know, I have somebody who is selling one a 6stage unit for 150, I just don't have that kinda cash until I get my deposit money back so I was hoping I could purchase some to do a few water changes with! That's why I wanna find some place that can sell it.

Thanks
Josh

All the water stations at Super Walmart are RODI water units. After you purchase a jug, I believe it's about .38 a gallon. Get a couple 5g jugs rather than a gazillion 1g jugs, and it's really not too much hassle. A word of advice though, buy the 5g jugs back by where they sell faucets and Brita water filters. etc. as they are the same jugs, but usually cheaper :) Once you get the 5g jug, I think it's 1.78 for refills.

I know if you rent, it's often an issue to put an RODI unit in, as you have to pierce one of the pipes. Who wants to buy a nice RODI unit and leave it there or pay your landlord to replace the pipe after you leave? Might as well get it from a grocery store somwhere until you can put a good one into your own place.

I am not sure if the HyVee are RO/DI. They are probably not DI but just a guess. Call the Culligan place and ask them as they are the supplier for them

You dont have to permanately attach an RO/DI unit, they can also be connected to your sink faucet or the water line for a washing machine etc. As to buying water, I suggest caution, irregardless of what they may claim, I have used water from Hy-Vee etc in the past, it was at best marginally better than tap water, I would see if you can borrow a TDS meter and test it before using it or spending much money on it.

Quite honestly, I doubt you will find DI water out of a machine as this is usually meant for drinking water, you do not want to drink DI water. If it were me, (I know the cost is greater and its a pain, but would get you by), I would use distilled water. JMO

A regular Walmart may have a water center, not sure, just know the Super ones with the grocery section do have them and they are reverse osmosis and irridiated too. They are checked monthly by a technician, but I have never personally checked the water with a TDS meter. Many grocery stores will have a water refill station, just call or go there and it will tell you how it's filtered.

...just curious what is an acceptable level on the tds meter. I have one, and a just tested a batch of H2O that I bought at Hyvee. It measured 30ppm vs 560ppm out of my tap in C'ville. What sort of readings are people getting from their RO only home units? I have tested SOM's in the past and Hyvee's reading has always been lower.

There really isnt a one size fits all answer to this, as long as your tank is doing well with no major algae outbreaks, I would see nothing wrong with this. The problem with a TDS reading is that you dont really know what is in your water, just that something is and it may not be all bad. In my world the only acceptable reading is 0, but thats just me:).

west hyvee sells ro/di. I'm in west ames, started out using the ro/di from hyvee, got lazy and fill out of the bathtub now, no noticeable difference.

...I see significantly more red algea when I use tap water as opposed to Hyvee's. I think that Allen is right in the fact that what Hyvee has is RO not RODI. The entire filtration process is described on the dispenser. It makes no mention of deionization.

can someone explain to me again why we don't want to drink RO/DI water?

I mean come on if it's good for the fish how on earth can it be bad for us?

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help and information, is the hyvee RO just the culligan dispenser? If so do you have to go and get 1 gallon jugs? that would be a pain, unless they have like a 5 gal jug that I could put it in and just refill.

thanks again
Josh
