RODI water

Hi guys, I just recently set up my new tank, (12 gallon fluval edge). I initially added live sand, about 12 pounds of live rock, and then filled it with tap water. In the tap water I used Instant Ocean water conditioner and instant ocean salt. The tank has now been sitting for about 4 days. Today I was surprised with an RODI unit, so my question is should I completely empty the tank and refill with the clean saltwater, or should I start doing water changes every couple days until all the tap water has been replaced? What would you all recommend is the best course of action? Thanks in advance!

The best method would be to empty the tank and start with 100% new water, you will never get all the old water out making partial water changes. It certainly may not be necessary to remove all the water, but that would be the best thing to do. Given that it isn't a lot of water that would be my recommendation.

Its only twelve gallons?

Dump'r and start over with the good stuff! I did NOT do that on my 30 gallon (I didn't own a RODI, and have been water changing into it) and it got algae-riffic.

As mentioned above - now is your chance, so sure! I wouldn't get all spastic about it - just drain as much as you can - perhaps even scoop a low spot in the sand to get down close to the bottom. I don't see any reason to dump out the sand or anything drastic like that.

And FWIW - (often excessive) algae/diatom/cyanobacteria growth in a new tank is just a normal part of the new tank cycle. It is going to happen even if you throw everything in the trash and start with 100% new rocks and sand. Stay on top of it, but don't take any drastic actions - it will all clear up in it's own time.

I think what I will do.. is mix up the new SW... then take all the rock out of the fuge..and give it a scrubbing and rid my fuge of the hair algea and all those nutrients.. and some of the old cheato as well.. then drain the fuge 46 gallons..dunno actual gallons though.. replace it with new SW and then.. syphon and clean my DT for however many gallons of new SW I have on hand..

Bunch of birds.. one stone

And make room for some more liverock..
(I have a live rock addiction..no wait.. it's not an adiction.. I can quit anytime.. :-)
