I know when to change it but I am only getting about 300 gallons of water before my DI is exhausted. I am just wondering if that is fairly normal or if maybe I have something wrong.
You need to test the incoming TDS, and the TDS after the RO unit. If your TDS is too high coming from the RO unit, it leaves the DI to remove what's left, which if it's too high, will exhaust the DI quickly.
You're missing my point, so let me go at it a different way. For ease, let's sat the incoming TDS is 100. The RO membrane has a 98% rejection rate and "is" working correctly. This means at the output of the RO unit the TDS becomes 2. The DI cartrige removes the remaining 2 TDS.
If the RO membrane isn't working correctly and only has a 75% rejection rate, with the incoming TDS 100, that would leave 25 TDS leaving the RO, the DI has to remove 25 TDS now, which in turn exhausts the DI resin quicker.
Without knowing what the TDS going to the DI, there's no way to know if 300 gallons is considered quickly.
