anybody not use filtered water on thier tank? Just wondering if anyone has any decent results w/o ro.....
post pics if you dont use filtered water

Until recently my mom has been using RODI water from walmart (the jugged kind) without any ill effects.

I used tap with prime for years and never really had a problem. For about the past year or so I have been using RODI

As much as we spend on filter equipment such as skimmers and phosban/carbon reactors. Why wouldn't you use ro/di water? Doesn't make sense to me.

I agree and also was impatient a couple years ago and started a system with tap and once I hooked up intense lighting I had an algae farm. It will also vary depending on water source/location,etc. But usually not a good idea.

My 55 was setup for 2 and a half years before I switched over to this tank about five months ago. I don't know if it makes any difference or not but My tap water test out at 170 on a tds reader I think thats lower than a lot of peoples.

I was just wondering. I have always used tap except when I had the store. its not that ro even cost much I just have never had issues so I never changed.

Vspeck knows the name of the TDS meter we used but our tap was showing 34 ppm out here in NoCo. Not sure if it's 100% accurate though. I use only RO until I hooked up this new sump, I added another 30 gals of tap that had been sitting in a trash can for about 3 days and was perfect. Now after doing that I have lost 2 fish so far and I believe another is on the way. I'm not sure if was due to the tap, but is the only thing I can think because my water tests just fine.

I do have an algae outbreak in one of my tanks and I heard that they can hide your nitrates so I'm puzzeled as to the loss of my fish right now. I'm wondering if my nitrates are higher than what the test is showing.

You got a reliable nitrate test kit? I have a Lamotte kit you can borrow if you need a really accurate test.

I might have to do that Nook, or I can just bring some water with me to the pizza night and do it then.

I personaly wouldn't use tap water. But that's JMHO. I don't want copper, metal, chlorine or anything else that might harm my fish & inverts. But that's just me.
