Rod's Gyre flow, Natural light, SPS dominated Reef

This tank is spectacular.

I'm presently planning my next tank and have very similar aesthetic tastes to you, I hate the look of powerheads and equipment in the main display. I'm planning on a 4 foot by 4 foot cube, and am really interested in going the gyre route, but since it will be 3 sides viewable, having bulky and unattractive powerheads stuck to the glass is not an option.

What advice would you give to someone planning a gyre tank after running yours for a few years now? Is there anything you wish you could change about the way yours is set up? Placement of outlets, rock work, etc. How has the 'gyre' effect held up as the corals have grown in? Did you at any point wish you could have added more flow? Do you find any weird growth patterns with corals near the closed loop outlets, or weird flow related growth patterns at all?

The one thing that I'd dearly love to change would be the dimensions of the tank! I reckon a 4 x 4 would be ideal for Gyre flow, or even better would be round. (Not that those things are going to happen)

I think the flow has slowed a bit and I'm due to pull out the plumbing under the sump and clean it out.

The corals have definitely grown around the flow patterns, especially the plating montys.

tank is awesome...but the pics are just as great

Thanx for the update.

Thanks, no problem.

Just had a reef nerds day on Saturday and my mate Ben Hamilton shot off a few pics, thought I'd share...
Thanks mate.

Thanks everyone for a great day.

Love the Xmas tree worms. How long have they been in the tank, i.e. how long have you managed to keep them?

Thx,

I have never actually direct fed anything in my tank.

What I do though is feed the tank. I make sure that there are a variety of foods going in, both large and small, both frozen and dry. The tank gets fed at least three times a day.

I also don't have a filter sock, underskim and have a cryptic zone in my sump.

I guess I like to buck trends, but I don't really like the sterile systems that seem to be popular with some lately.

No it's not, it's my Teal stag with purple growth tips. This is an old photo.

It is now approximately 2ft wide and 2ft tall. I've recently cut about 6inches off the top as it was nearly at the water surface. It made about 30 large frags lol.
